March area news

Not too sure how the weather is going at the moment, one
week wet and the next, dry and sunny. Hopefully by the time
you read this report in early April it will have made up its mind
and the weather will be good. Our Annual Area Dinner and
Presentation Night took place at the Templeton,
Templepatrick on Sat 23 rd Feb with thirty members and their
partners there for a very enjoyable evening with fun and a
good meal, even if was served a little slowly at times. It was
good to see so many there from near and far, with a few staying
for the night. A big thank you to Alan (H) for all the arrangements
and the financial help on the evening. Of course, the
meal had to be finished off with a sample of delightful chocolate
brownies from, you know who - Ciara! Thankfully there
were a few to spare and rather than hand them back they,
naturally, made the homeward journey to Ballymena. As
usual on these occasions it was a difficult decision as to
whom the awards were to go to. Probably the easiest though
this year was the Motorsport Award as the winner, Paul
Robinson, had an outstanding year within the motorsport
arena. Paul finished 2nd in class 16a (historic road going
saloon and sports cars) of the Northern Ireland
Hillclimb Championship. Well done Paul, over such a
sustained period of time it couldn’t have been easy.
Unfortunately, Paul wasn’t there to receive his award
and so it was accepted on his behalf by Alan (F)
and, of course, later handed over to Paul by Alan.
Naturally in the presence of his mighty, all conquering,
The Ladies Award this year was also a close run one,
like last year, when one considers the numbers of ladies
who come along to our events. The 2019 winner, and I
know she was truly shocked by the look on her face,
was Valerie Foster. As you know Valerie and Ernie
are away quite a lot in sunny Spain and it is nice to see
them both taking part in the runs and
events when they are at home. I should also say that Valerie
was instrumental in bringing Ruth and Oscar along to our
events, weekends and runs and hopefully they will continue
to do so.
I always have difficulty each time that I have been Area
Organiser in deciding who should be the Member of the
Year. Thankfully in our club, small as it is, we have several
members who regularly give their all to both the club, and
Triumph owners, throughout the year. This year I nominated
Alan (F) for all his work during the year, whether a run, a
BBQ, show planning or just plain helpfulness.
Thanks Alan, a worthy winner.
Our meeting in March was a reasonably quiet affair with final
plans made for Totally Triumph on Sat 6th April. Earlier than
usual this year due to the pending local elections at the beginning
of May – our usual date. I just heard at teatime before
the area meeting that Chic and Iain were unable to come due
to the earlier date but, to lessen the club’s natural disappointment,
any orders placed before the show would be sent
free of postage. Not too bad an offer in the circumstances! If
you get this edition, April, of The Courier before the show and
you haven’t entered just come along on the day and you will
be made most welcome, along with your Triumph of course,
if you can. Plans were also finalised for our North Antrim run
on 23rd Mar and hopefully the weather was good, along with
the turnout. The Carrick Classic Car Club have invited us to
their shared stand at Kilbroney this year on Sat 15th June and
would like to have an idea of advanced numbers going to the
show. If it is your intention to attend, please let me know so
that I can make them aware. To make the stand viable there
needs to be at least fifteen or so members between the two
clubs. Final numbers are now in for the weekend run to
Wooden Bridge, Wicklow at the end of May (25/27) but if you
change your mind and wish to come along get in touch with
Alan (H) or me and we will see what can be arranged. As is
the norm within the club it is up to each member to book their
own room for the weekend and I would ask that if you do book
that you would let Alan (H) and I know when you have booked.
When booking at the hotel please mention the car club, and
TSSC, to obtain the negotiated rate. You will NOT need to
pay up front, but just give details of your payment card.
Contact details for the hotel are Woodenbridge Hotel & Lodge
Vale of Avoca, Arklow, Co. Wicklow Tel: +353 (0402)

Dates for your diary for the coming months. Area meeting
on Wed 3rd April, Totally Triumph, Lisburn Sat 6th April
and The Argory, Dungannon 27th April and then our Area
meeting on 1st May followed by Shane’s Castle on Mon
6th and then, of course, our Trunnion Oiling on Sat 11th
May at The Rinkha, Islandmagee. Remember for The Argory
and Shane’s Castle you must book yourself although, as
usual, I might be able to forward an application form. There
we have it then until we meet again.
