Engine and cubic capacity change. 1 Month, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
Hi,
I will soon be changing the engine in my Spitfire from 1300cc to 2000cc. According to the DVLA website, there is a lot of pony about having a receipt from the garage for the new engine.
I own both cars, the Spitfire and the GT6 donor.
How do I go about detailing the changes? Should I just fit the engine and then inform DVLA of the CC and engine number change, and hope for the best?
Any advice gratefully recieved.
Regards, Steve.

this is a tricky one....as you already own the donor car it should be straightforward. However DVLA being DVLA, you "may" need to get a helpful garage to scribble down that the engine in th espitfire is now 1998cc, number ABC123HC or whatever. Try your local DVLA office (if you still have one.

Thanks Clive,
I asked at the Peterborough DVLA office today whilst picking up my tax disc. They didn't have a clue and suggested I go ahead with the swap and hope for the best! She was totally unaware of the ruling that is on the DVLA website.
I think I may be able to get a 'receipt' from a friendly local garage if required.

Regards, Steve.

It doesn't need to be a receipt, just a letter confirming th eengine number and cc. Thats my understanding anyway.
The fun is coming with mine as I am fitting a Ford engine. And their engines come unstamped when supplied as replacement units. Hmmmm, I think I will have to give it a unique number, as I believe that is all that is required. Fingers crossed!

having fallen "foul" of this recently DVLA were most awkward and sent a police officer round to inspect the vehicle in question caused loads of hassle and more importantly time off the road as they would not tax the vehicle while the query was ongoing (all was ok but took 6 weeks)

If you have a recpt for the engine fitting from a garage all is well, a recpt for the engine alone is not acceptable proof of fitting

what i did with the second car was was take some pictures of the engine, and the engine number in he car and submitted this with a short covering letter stating i had fitted the engine myself this then went through on the nod!

by the way its the same for all engine changes, they dont care if its an increase in capacity or a decrease

Dare i say it the easiest way is to get on the word processor and "create" a recpt

Hugh

I also did this, just sent a brief covering letter with a photo of the engine in place and a "receipt" (was just a printout of the paypal receipt from buying the engine on ebay). Went through fine, though it did take around 2 months for my V5 to come back.

Regards

Steve

I know that the DVLA seem to be creating a lot of hassle over a straight forward engine swop, but the reason behind all of this is to prevent car ringing. If you know that, it may make your approach to the DVLA easier.

Anything that proves that you own both cars and engines and shows the audit trail of the swop, SHOULD (!) be OK.

Good luck.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions guys. I think I will photo copy as much documentation as I can muster and include a comprehensive, well structured, covering letter.

Mike, made my blood run cold when you mentioned 'audit trail' reminded me of our last visit from Lloyds. ISO audits at Perkins engines are always a 'busy' time lol.

Regards, Steve.

Ah DVLA!

Just had to buy a new frame from a dealer at great expense after the DVLA threw a wah over the lack of paperwork for one of my classic bikes.

All the numbers matched but the bike was a 'black hole' in their record when it ended up as a basket case donkeys years ago. As I couldn't prove it's provenence, bought it at a autojumble in bits sans plates, the best they would settle for was issuing me a Q plate… Grrrrr! Expensive bike worth nothing. With the help of the club, a replacement frame with a full audit trail, and a dating certificate I'll be able to get a proper age related registration for it now.

To cut a long story short, if the DVLA think any 'ringing' is going on they can be a complete PITA.
