Am thinking about mounting new speakers into the rear side panels, as the front panel look so nice I didn't want to spoil them. Am removing the original
Radio Consol, (and keeping should I ever sell) as I need to put in a cassette radio player, need music to enjoy.
Just wondered, would it be really frowned upon to cut into rear side panels?

You own the car... you can do whatever you like with it (and should). If someone objects, they should ofer to buy it off you!

I decided not to. Got some of those speakers with plastic mounts (70's stylie) used for rear parcel shelvesand plug them into the rear channel of your
hifi. With the help of a hacksaw they will squeeze into the rear side pockets. The speakers have no bass response at all so, after some advise from a
local dealer, turned up the bass level (and booster if you have it) to full. Then you buy some stand alone tweeters (about double the size of a 50p),
blue tac them above the dash on each side pointing directly at you and plug them into the other channel (front). The tweeters have a resistor fitted to
take out all the bass.
The general theory is that bass is not as directional as treble (this is especially good with soft tops since the directional sound is close to the
listener so you don't have to entertain the surrounding countyside as well).
Good sound and no holes!
This is probably as clear as mud and should be explained by someone who ........

Thanks for that Jonathon, however I don't have rear side pockets at all. Just flat panels. And am sure if I were to rely on sticking anything on I
would be forever worried that my lad would 'unstick' it. Kids are apt to fiddle with things that can be fiddled with, especially if bluetack is
sited.
My autotrim chap has mentioned that they wouldn't clear the hood mechanism, so further investigation is needed I think. He suggested hanging
central in the dash, where the original speaker now is and another in the map box in the passenger well. This is not the way for me to go as
firstly will look a bit tacky and secondly it wouldn't be in stereo!
Have every intention of blasting in the countryside!!

This is a late response, but I only just saw your message!
My suggestion below may be too late for the original poster, but might just help another reading this thread later?
I once took the small speakers from the front door 'pockets' of a Jaguar XJ6 and fitted
them into the rear seat side panels on my Herald Convertible.
They fitted well and did not interfer with the folding hood frame at all.

Get a good pair of speakers that come in their own plastic pods, then using a strip or two of the perforated metal reinforcing you get for
car stereos make up a pair of curved hooked brackets for each and screw them to the base of the pods. Then once you put the hood down, hang
a speaker over each side rail on the hooks. They don't foul anything and don't fall off and your hood bag goes over the top of the hooks.
They'll also stay in place if you need to put the hood up, but can be a bit uncomfortable for rear seat passengers.

or to keep the sound and bas up front buy a good set of 6x9's and fit under dash, great for convertible use as keeps sound up front and
out of site for convertible use.

I ended up cutting holes in both front doors and rear side panels, have fantastic quadrophonic sound with excellent bass all round now.
Blasting in the countryside!
