I have finally got her running but, as ever, it has opened a whole new can of worms. One of which concerns one of my stromburg carbs. The air valve sticks
on its way down at about 1/3 open. I have cleaned all the moving parts on several occasions with little effect. I have discovered that, if I don't screw
the top of the carb down it does go back down. This suggests that there is a vacuum being created somewhere. Short of shelling out for a complete overhaul
I am not sure what to do. Can any of you help me?

William
If the valve is sticking I suggest it's one of the following:
1. the needle isn't exactly centred; or
2. the damper assembly isn't straight.
Given that you say the valve closes when the top's off the carb, the second one seems more likely.
Does it close with the damper removed? What happens if you swap the dampers over?

Many thanks for the advice Ian. Sadly it does close with the damper removed and changing the dampers doesn't make any difference. Except that I
have noticed that my dampers are not the same. One float is a couple of millimetres longer than the other and one is brass while the other is
alloy. This gives one of the air valves more free vertical movement than the other.
How would I go about checking that the needle is centred?

Also, definitely invest in an owners manual where common owner maintenance like jet recentring is described in enough basic detail to get you
through.

You need to re-center the jets.
Undo the large nut situated above the mixture adjuster. This holds the jet assembly in place
With the large nut a half a turn un-done move the piston up and down. At this stage the piston should now be free.
Now keep moving the piston up and down, at the same time slowly re-tighten up the nut.
If the piston start to stick then back off the nut and start again.

Fantastic. It worked a treat. Thank you Dave.
