Donald, you want a 17ACR Lucas alternator, available from any motor factors for around 30 to 35 pounds. You can take your old one in as it will be
'exchange'. Do not worry if it is not the correct one as most likely they will not check it! You WILL need the correct alternator mounting bracket
214268 to attach to the engine block. The dynamo brackets are not suitable.

A Lucas 16/17/18ACR will fit. All look indentical on the outside and are the same physical size. Each produces increasing output. A 17ACR is probably
best of you are using original dynamo wiring (approx 35amps), but if yuo have upgraded or duplicated wiring, then an 18ACR producing up to 45 amps will
cost very little more.
There are plenty of ebay sites selling these, most reconditioned, around the £35 and NOT requiring an exchange. Search under "Lucas alternator" and you will find quite a few. Just be careful to get the correct "hand" as some were mounted on the left hand side of the block and some on the right. I THINK you want a "right hand" fit even though the GT6 one is on the left hand side of the car. Say the alternator is for a GT6 or Spitfire and the supplier will work out which one you need. Plenty of both hands about at the moment as they were fitted to plenty of 1970s and 1980s cars, and not just Triumphs. It's worth making sure the suppliers supply with pulley fitted. Getting the old one off is a pig of a job usually. (If you need to get the old one off, if you can't do it yourself, gripping the pulley with an old fan belt wrapped in the pulley and the ends held tight in a vice, take it to your local tyre fitters and ask them to undo it with an air impact wrench. Will take them a couple of minutes!)
The larger series (25ACR?) alternators as fitted to the big saloons would also fit, but are physically bigger and a bit rarer, so I'd go for the smaller 16/7/8ACR series for a Vitesse.
BTW, if you fit the right belt, you CAN use the dynamo adjuster bracket, but may find the access to no 1 spark plug a little tight.

The 17ACR is fitted to the TR7 and well worth fitting to the Vitesse. The 17ACR will produce 35 Amps.
Most of the large Mk11 saloons were fitted either with the 16 or 17 ACR.
Don't forget if you up-rate to 45 amps then you MUST up-grade the wiring to take the extra current.

Still run my MK1 Vitesse with a dynamo, never had a problem, so thats talked one up. To my MK1 Vitesse long term project I fitted an alternator from a 1500 Dolomite,with a thought of upgrading the roadworthy Vitesse, using the Dolomite alternator to block mounting bracket but a longer adjuster bracket and I believe drive belt. This gave plenty of clearence and worked fine.-

The 16/17/18 ACR was a standard fitting to many BL vehicles not just Triumphs so you can widen your search.
Watch the amp output as I believe there was a range available and depending on your needs, high power lights, ICE etc you may have too little.
You might also consider the later replacement for the 18 ACR that also had a greater range of amp output the A115 and A125 but the same case size as the originals.
Have a look at http://www.alternatormart.co.uk/ , they trade as Hilmart UK and I found them very helpful and not unresonably priced.

Thanks!! I'm not sure that the wiring has been updated (the stuff I've uncovered so far looks pretty shot / original) so I'll stick to the 17ACR.
hanks for your help. Next job, I've just got break two fingers to get to the back diff bolts.....

A127 on our vit6 with new wires and halogen lighting from relays , all 4 on dip and main and just pased its 3rd MOT
very illuminating and having read the regulations for 40years put them in the bin when I retired Its a Triumph .. peter
