My neighbour has a MK2 vitesse, the temp gauge goes right up to red after 10 secs even when engine is cold,we have tried my sensor and gauge off my
vitt(both OK),same problem, could it be the wiring earthing inbetween the two?

Try taking a temporary lead from the sensor to the gauge ( gauge out of the car if you can ), you will have to earth the gauge body and this should
identify the problem.
The gauge is usually earthed via the metal backing of the dash and the mounting bracket

Thanks Chris,i'll give it a try.

Adrian,
How's the fuel gauge?
Unless the sensor has gone, the problem is usually the voltage stabiliser that supplies both. If you can get a voltmeter on the supply from the
stabiliser, it should wobble about at 10V.

All becomes clear....just been informed by owner that the rad is hot at the top and cold at the bottom, temp ok when at speed with the
thermostat out!!!!!!!!!!!(could have told me that before)!!!!!!!!!!!!..............water pump methinks

New rad, good pump, system flushed and back flushed with chemic,no stat, water runs through the system like a stream,no air
locks, heater working, temp gauge in the red after 1 min driving.Stop, take cap off no hiss ,water not boiling.
Different sender unit and gauge wired direct to battery ,straight to red.Previous owner of 6 years says it's always been like
that(really helpful). It's just been tuned and we all believe it to be a genuine 50,000 mile engine.Any ideas? Please?
PS.I would'nt drive without the temp gauge working properly either!

Sounds like the Voltage Stabalizer is at fault, had the same problem on mine. GOOD LUCK.

If you are connecting directly to the battery and not by the voltage stabiliser unit then this may well be the problem as this
will place a higher voltage on the gauge and make it read higher.
Other points is the gauge the correct type for the 2 Litre, is the gauge working correctly and is the voltage stabiliser
working correctly.

After testing the stabiliser,a la John, days ago, that is found to be the problem, however, new pump etc,etc will not go
amiss,i have no bleeding idea about voltage stabilisers, fortunatley the lecturer at the local college has.
Thanks to all who helped.
one must listen to those who know best, one must listen to those who know best, one must listen to those who know best,
Thanks again

Chris, you do not have to earth off the gauge body for the temp to read. Gauge body earths are generally there to provide a circuit for the
bulb.

I agree sounds like the lead between the Temp Gauge and Sensor is shorting down to earth some where.
