I have acquired a D-type overdrive gearbox for my Vitesse 6 which is reputed to be correct for the vehicle. I checked the ratios and they appear to be
correct, however, the gearbox number begins "GR" and I cannot find any reference to this prefix in any of my books. Can anyone confirm that this is correct
and if not, what might it have belonged to in the past. The only other clue is that the Lucas solenoid was made in period 10 in 1966.
Thanks for any information, Ray Payne.

The prefix GR was normally used on factory rebuilt gearboxes.

Assuming that it is a three syncromesh 'box, this would appear to tie up with being a factory reconditioned unit and will be correct for your
car.

As a further check on it being a Vitesse 6 box, check that it has an alloy Vitesse type bellhousing with a gap behind the carbs for the
clutch operating arm, (or if no bellhousing, that there are three holes around the front of the layshaft for the springs which preload the
thrust washer). I say this as occasionally Spitfire 1-3 overdrive boxes are sold as Vitesse 6 and vice-versa.
Then take the top off and count the brass synchro rings! 3 for a Vitesse 6 (and no helical gear for 1st), 4 rings and an extra gear on the
mainshaft and layshaft for a Vitesse 2 litre box (or Spitfire mark 4 box).
A Vitesse 2 litre box would physically fit a 1600, but you might find the first gear ratio a little high though it does have synchro and is
a stronger and quieter box. If you do use a 2 litre box, make sure you use the slave cylinder and release bearing and carrier off your 1600
as the clutches are quite different.
