Hi there,
I am just rebuilding a Vitesse MK II into an Estate and as the car isn´t original anymore, I was thinking of using a modern 5 speed gearbox.
Is there anybody out there, who tried this before or am I the onlyone thinking of such a horrible thing.
As I want to use my Vitesse Estate as a daily drive, I thought there should be a modern gearbox, which fits onto the normal clutchbell and into the
chassies without to much trouble.
Everything, which is cheaper than a overdrive-conversion, should be worth a few thoughts.
Thanks for every sugestion in advance

Carl,
Do you have your Courier for this month (May,2007)?
The Modified section tells you how to modify a bellhousing to fit.
The possibilities are endless, though not all are practical.

Carl,
The most poular coversion is to fit a Ford type 9 gearbox.
There are several suppliers of kits to do this, take a look in the adverts in Practical Classics and do a "search" of this site.
Bellhousings to convert between the Triumph engine and the Ford gearbox are readilly available as a commercially made item.
There are several members of this messageboard who have done such a conversion.
If you want something more exotic, then you are "on your own" and will have o fabricate a lot of the bits yourself, as John Davies suggested, look at
the article in this months Courier about bellhousing fabrication.
However, by the time you have sourced the bits and a Ford T9 gearbox and got your propshaft custom made you will probably find that it is comparable to
getting an overdrive kit.

Thanks for all your advice.
As I see it, I will have to come to England to buy a conversion kit. If it will be an o/d or 5-speed is for later to decide.
Here in Germany it is not so easy to find a complet set and if one finds one, it normaly comes from Canley as well.
When i got home yesterday, the new courier had arrived. I will start studying this evening.
Cheers

Ther might not be much to choose price - wise between a five speed 'box and an overdrive conversion, but I would expect a more modern 5 speed
'box to be more reliable than the o/d, and hopefully give less aggro in the long run?
