Hi all,

I see from the latest Courier that David Manners spares are avdertising a pre-drilled black plastic gear gearbox cover- suitable for GT6. From the picture it looks to be more substantial than the replacement fibreglass items that are generally available.

Does anyone have one fitted ? If so what is the fit like and do you know if it will fit an o/drive Vitesse ?

if you find out, please let me know, i think these wuold be a lot better thean the fibrelgass one i am struggling to fit.....

I have fitted a plastic gearbox cover to my GT6, bought about 5 years ago from Rimmer Bros. I have also ftted a fibreglass version to my TR6. The plastic version fitted much more easily because it was pre-drilled and flexible. The fibreglass version is more difficult to fit, although it feels a bit more permanent.

Overall I prefer the black plastic version. With either version, be sure to insulate it well to stop heat coming into the passenger compartment. I used the aluminium foil/polystyrene laminate sold in DIY stores (to insulate under wallpaper, behind radiators). This can be fixed with double-sided adhesive tape (most liquid adhesives dissolve the polystyrene), and is best fixed to the top surface of the cover, inside the car (otherwise the heat will cause it to fall off and rattle against the gearbox - nasty noise like breaking polystyrene cups!).

  I refurbished my old one this weekend rather than buy a new one.
  
  Reinforced the weak areas, and replaced areas that had rotted away with some fibreglass. Had to do something about all that heat coming into the cabin!
  Stuck some aluminium tape (used for aircraft repair) to the underside to reflect heat.
  Glued the gearstick gaitor on properly, and then trimmed the coin holder bit with an offcut of vinyl and some spray adhesive.
  
  Looks alright I reckon, and fits in much more easily than a new replacement would have done. I just hate using crappy pattern parts, and will always repair rather than replace if I can.

      What an excellent looking job! Are you intending to refit some sound insulation? If any survives, you can restaple it into plastic bags and pop-rivet (with big washers to spread the load) onto the tunnel. The foil will reflect some heat, but the sound insulation also helps to keep the heat at bay as thermal insulation.

        talking of gear leaver gaitors I used a MGB one with a circle of plywood under the carpet
        to support the carpet, ply is fixed to the tunnel with the 2 central screws through some riv nuts Peter

        I recently asked Dave at Canley whether they are planning to market a plastic gearbox cover suitable for the Vitesse, alongside the one they now stock for the GT6. Apparently they are made in Europe somewhere and the manufacturer has no plans to make one for the Viteese range - a decision I find strange considering the potential market for said item ! Maybe the Club can step in and convince them the to do so ?

        Ref the insulation, I, having fitted the cover down securely and frankly want to leave it there, will slap some sound deadening felt-like underlay over the top of the cover, underneath the carpets.. I have bought some moulded carpets, so I'll see how much room there is to spare under those, but yes, it will all help keep the noise and heat down, as you say. I do like the MG job, too, and I may fit a snazzy bit of chrome one day, but for now I'll run with what Triump intended as funds are tight!
        
        I reckon a plastic cover will be made when all the cardboard ones have finally disintegrated and there is a captive market willing to shell out! We'll see..
