Ticking noise from gearbox

Hi there,
I've recently noticed a ticking noise coming from the gearbox. I initially thought it was from the engine (tappets), but the noise can only be heard when on the move, so guessing it must be the gearbox. I haven't checked the oil level yet, but will try and do this over the bank holiday, also there is currently no soundproofing under the tunnel cover (will put this back at the same time!). Is this noise normal and I can hear it more because the soundproofing is currently stuffed in the boot, or likely to be just the oil level being a bit low? Or hopefully not something more serious?

Is it speed sensititve? Ticking on the more is usually UJs - could be prop UJ at the gearbox end?

  Hi Jason, yes does seem to be speed sensitive. However, if I go fast enough the wind noise eventually drowns it out! Are there likely to be any visible signs of play when I take the tunnel cover off? Never considered the UJ as when I had a worn one on one of the driveshafts it was more of a knocking noise.

    It's only a guess Phil, UJ's tick, bearings rumble - everything is cured by bigger stereo or louder exhaust You probably won't find anything visible unless it's bad! UJs are cheap and relatively east to fit - when they let go they wreack havoc so if you don't know when they were last replaced it's a good opportunity to do it now

      Don't forget the speedo cable / drive which can also tick very lightly... it all depends how loud / quiet this tick is.
      A good stereo covers a multitude of sins..

        Cheers Colin, will give that a check over as well, but think it is probably too loud to be the speedo drive. Got the stereo, just need to fit it...
