over drive D type

Can any body tell me what's wrong with my friend's overdrive? Firstly it's been in the shed for ten years, and he has put it straight on the car without cleaning it. Today we changed the oil in the gearbox, we also checked the relief valve and the operating valve. And we tried to do the non- return valve, we managed to undo the plug and all we managed to get out was a spring and a small ball bearing. We tried to get the valve body out but it would not move. Is it screwed in or does it just pull out. Or do we need a special tool to remove it. After all that we put it all back together. We can hear the overdrive solenoid click in and out but does not engage. When we do flick the switch to put the car in overdrive we get oil oosing out of the lubricating bush which is on top of the overdrive. We would certainly appreciate any help that can be offered.

All The Best.
Mark.
