I've recently put an overdrive box in the car, as I've never had overdrive I don't know what to compare it with...
When the choke is still out, overdrive wont engage for up to 15 seconds,
When it's warm it takes 1 to 2 seconds.
Is this good or bad? I realy don't know.
Many thanks,
Pete

It should be pretty close to instant - at most a second or so. But, I don't think I've ever got into overdrive when the engine is still cold enough to
need choke. It could be that the gearbox oil isn't flowing to all the places it should when its cold and thick? Perhaps it's time to drain and refill
the box with new oil ?

It's a new box, with new oil so I don,t think that's the problem.
Would a lighter oil do the trick then, or would it damage the box?

I assume it's got the correct spec oil in to start with? There have been a couple of threads on this subject recently, so you should be able to
check what it should be fairly easily. If so, I certainly wouldn't put anything thinner in. That doesn't help you with the delay problem though
- in my experience it's not normal, but I have no more ideas as to the cause.

The one to two seconds when warm is not too bad, especially if it is an old D type overdrive. However there is something rather strange
about the delay when cold which is MUCH too long.
First of all make sure that you DO have the right oil in and at the right level.
Check that the solenoid is adjusted correctly as per manual.
If that brings no joy, then the either the o/d is well worn (and it's clutch will start to slip before too long? replacement is the only
viable option) or there is something amiss in the hydraulic side of the o/d. This could be as simple as clogged filters which just need
cleaning, a worn pump (get another o/d!) or a mis-seating valve which you can try reseating with a hammer and brass drift as per workshop
manual. If the pressure valves have been set up wrong, unless you know what you are doing, it would be as well to get another overdrive
unit.
You could look at the tips part of the Canley Classic website, or give them a call, or O/D spares in Sheffield who know these devices
inside out.
