After fitting J-Type conversion kit from Canley Classics in March 2004, about 3 months ago, O/D 3rd stated to pop in and out, and after a week or so, not
engage at all. O/D 4th still fine until about a month later when the same problem happened and resulted in no O/D at all. When inspected at garage where
O/D was fitted, the inhibitor switch was deemed the problem and replaced. All worked fine for about 2 weeks until now when same problem it happening with
3rd when trying to engage O/D. 4th still fine and no other problems with gear change or selection.
Any ideas? The sun's here!!!

First, as it's the easiest thing to do, I'd try bypassing the inhibitor switch. (I know you've just had it replaced but it's something that can be
eliminated from the enquiries with 100% certainty with very little effort).
If that makes no difference (in theory it shouldn't seeing as the garage replaced it) then it's time for the clever sticks to get their brains
going.
Could it be speed related? eg. lower gear, lower road/propshaft speed = less oil pressure in the overdrive...
Mayby it has a partially blocked oilway that only allows enough oil through at high speeds?
That's all I can think of really.

It it's working on one gear and not t'other then it's gotta be the inhibitor switch. Bear in mind that these things do wear and often don't get
replaced with new ones (not 100% sure if new ones are actually available) having said that they are plentiful. I had a similar problem on my
Herald's J type overdrive, I discarded the fibre washer that sits between the switch and gearbox casing - job done.
