I know the Haynes manual tells you how to remove the Woodruff key from the crankshaft by using a pair of pliers, but does anyone know the real way to do it
without resorting to violence and damaging everything?

Drift it out with a hammer and a soft metal rod e.g. brass.
If you use metal softer than the crank then you should not cause any damage.

i can vouch for the hammer and most-abused-tool as a means of applying pry force to knock it gently upwards
