Thanks for the help with the carbs. Here's another for this collective font of knowledge.
Firstly valve springs. Both my manuals tell me that I should have two springs per valve but I only have one. Is that a problem on a 1600? I can't say that
I noticed anything wrong when she was running.
Secondly head gaskets. I recently purchased a head gasket from Canley and it doesn't seem to have done the job. Each turn of the engine using the fan
results in a lot of hissing from around the join. Should I have used some jointing compound? If so what sort do you recommend? I don't think that the head
is at all uneven but I will check when I have to take it off again.

William,
I suspect, but don't know for sure, that the 1600 Vitesse only had one spring per valve.
Your post reads as if you haven't started the engine since replacing the head. Have you filled it with water? If the hissing is a leak from a
cylinders, then the engine would not hold water either! You do hear hissing when you turn the engine by hand, or I do. Small leaks at the valves or
piston rings I presume, but not a problem. Try starting it!

I have had her up to running temperature on two occasions. I re tightened the studs after the first time. She is now running quite badly. The
hissing is coming from were the push rods come though the head but there could be some coming from the outside of the head. I will be investigating
with soapy water later today.

Will,
Good idea, the soapy water!
And AH! its a 1600, with those swaged in tubes for the pushrods. They notoriously leak oil, but I can't think why they should have gas pressure
behind them, other than crankcase pressure. Is a plug leaking????? Careful with the soapy water there!
