Engine Numbers

Prompted by the recent comments about IVR forms I thought I ought to fill one in. In doing so I noticed that I do not have the original engine.
Not particularly surprising in a car that is 34 years old.
However the letters and numbers must mean something and I wondered what. the current number is ML27588HE anyone know what the letters mean? Is there a reference document somewhere?

My spit 1500 engine has prefix DM
Any ideas where its from please?

  DM was not a Triumph pre-fix but if you look closer it may read DH which is a Dolomite 1300 engine.
  FM would have been the prefix for the Spitfire 1500 lump.

    Sorry John,
    DM is a valid Triumph prefix, it's from a Toledo 1500. Not an engine officially supplied to the UK market (as far as I'm aware), but widely used in Toledos for export,

      I've just checked the Amicale Spitfire site and they show DM as applying to the RWD Triumph 1500. I can't verify this as I don't have any factory literature on that model. It would however explain how this one came to be in a UK car.
      Interestingly, Amicale doesn't show the DM engine as being a Toledo application, but the factory literature does,

        thanks craig your info is spot on i brought a 1200 engine on saturday via ebay when home compared new with old is DH number same engine as 13/60 herald thanks for info ray j

        Just a quickie !! I have KCY on chassis and KDY on engine, checked the Canley site and KC refers to my mark 2 gt6, but list doesn't show KD. Could it be that it is an USA engine for mark 2 and hence why not shown on the list ??? Helen

        Oops, it got me thinking that much, that instead of relying on the details on the V5, I went to double check the engine/Vin plate.... um err !! After scratching off the lovely black paint, very close scrutiny revealed...Yep, It's been copied down wrong, the 'Y' in both cases should be a 7, and the ''D' on the engine number should be a 'C', so all is well, except for the fact i think i need to go to the opticians now, or at least be sober next time.

        The prefix DH was first introduced on the 1300 Toledo in October 1972 and carried over onto the 1300 Dolomite. It replaced the DG prefix which had the same spec as the later GK 13/60 engines.
        
        The changes to the DH engine were larger inlet valves and a higher lift cam. The cam used in the DG engine was the same as the 13/60. Where as the cam used in the DH engine was the same as that used on the 1500 Spit. These changes should have increased the power but Triumph never stated that an increase had taken place!!!! It looks more like Triumph using as many parts common parts on both the 1300 and 1500 engines than wishing to increase the power of the 1300 engine.
        
        I got 125K miles, from new, out of one of these engines but the oil pressure was then down to 35 PSI and the ends well past their sell by date!
