I have purchased today an engine from a 1977 (R reg) Triumph 2000 (strombergs) which I would like to put in my '64 Vitesse. Should I buy the gearbox as
well which has overdrive and is there anything I should be aware of whilst doing the change.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I`m doing this myself at the mo with a 2.5 into a 67 Vitesse..........check the archive for John`s and Laurences advice .....very useful. The box will
only fit if you do substantial chassis mods,i.e. body off the chassis and widening the middle rails. The sump will need using and modifying from your
existing engine. If you use your existing box then the backplate and flywheel from your existing engine will need to be swapped over. The older gearbox
is weak, but i`m going to risk it on mine and see how it goes,BUT,my car is not everyday transport.

2.5 into a Vitesse - me too! It has a 2.5 and 2.5 box in it when I got it - I didn't like the box, there was no proper rear mounting and the whole
things looked to be at the wrong angle - it did fit between the rails - just.
Anyway, I am going with a GT6 box and J type overdrive mated to a 2.5 PI engine. Many people say it won't take the torque and will fail but I am
going to try it nevertheless - also I have the GT6 box, the 2.5 box casing was cracked and have met it's maker now.
I'm a long was off turning a wheel in anger though.

My Vitesse has a 2.5 and is still running the original box and overdrive. As and when it fails I'll update to an early 1850 box with Jtype.
Fingers crossed no problems yet despite being abused daily!

That's what I plan to do, the box I have is an unknown quantity at present - I never drove the car it came out of and it's been in my
garage for some years so it'll need a strip and clean at the very least, if it's in any way suspect I'll rebuild it with the stronger 1850
internals.
How's your diff holding up? Witha 2.5 in there the transmission seems to start to show up as a weakness. "Abused daily" - that's my plan -
drive it like you stole it :-)

Some thoughts - The 1977 UK 2000 engine had SU's not Strombergs. If it is this year it will be prefixed with ML. Are you in the UK?
The 2000 box is not easy to fit into the Vitesse chassis therefore, I would suggest that fitting the normal 2 litre gearbox may be a better option.
Things to change -
Change the front plate for a Vitesse/GT6 Item or just saw off the 2000 mounting legs.
If using a 2 Litre gearbox then you will need to change the backplate for a Vitesse/GT6 type.
Change the sump for a Vitesse/GT6 type.
Change the front crank pulley spacer for a Vitesse 2 Litre Mk11 type. The 2000 type is to long and will push the fan through the rad!
The 1600 diff is weak so change this for a 2 Litre 3.89 or 1500 Spitfire 3.63.
Up-grade the front brakes to 2 Litre type.
Ensure the eight engine mounting bracket bolt holes on the block have been tapped out. As these were not used on the 2000 sometimes they did not always
tap them.
There lots of other small bits you will also need to change.

Dave
