Those of you with Triumph's designed to run on 5 star 100 Ron petrol (eg GT6's) may be interested to know that some branches of Tesco's are currently
selling 99 RON petrol as a trial, this is even a higher octane than Optimax and LRP/4 Star but will still be unleaded though.
Extract below from another Car forum that I use:-
"99 ron petrol at Tesco
Tesco are doing 99 ron petrol at selected stores..
A few scooby owners I know have been using it and there is an improved performance with 99 ron compared with Optimax, and its cheaper at Tesco..plus you
get clubcard points!
Anyone here tried it yet???
Tesco's are running a trial in the SE. They are considering reusing their LRP pumps for 99 octane petrol. The following stations have 99 octane:
Beford 1--RIVERFIELD DRIVE, BEDFORD, BEDFORDSHIRE
MK41 0SE
Cheshunt Extra--BROOKFIELD CENTRE, CHESHUNT, WALTHAM CROSS, HERTFORDSHIRE
EN8 0TA
Crawley Hazelwick--HAZELWICK AVENUE, CRAWLEY, WEST SUSSEX
RH10 1GY
Gillingham Kent----COURTENEY ROAD, GILLINGHAM, KENT
ME8 0GX
Lakeside Extra---CYGNET VIEW, LAKESIDE, GRAYS, ESSEX
RM20 1TX
Ramsgate Manston--MANSTON ROAD, RAMSGATE, KENT
CT12 6NT
Salisbury 2--BOURNE CENTRE, SOUTHAMPTON ROAD, SALISBURY, WILTSHIRE
SP1 2NY
Sandhurst Extra--THE MEADOWS, MARSHALL ROAD, SANDHURST, SURREY
GU47 0FD
Sevenoaks Riverhead--AISHER WAY, RIVERHEAD,SEVENOAKS, KENT
TN13 2QS
Stevenage Extra--THE FORUM, STEVENAGE, HERTFORDSHIRE
SG1 1ES
Winchester--EASTON LANE, WINCHESTER, HAMPSHIRE
SO23 7RS
There are some rumours:
1. Shell is importing their Vpower(Blue color) into UK.
2. BP is importing 99Ron petrol by next week."

You've got to remember that any real improved performance can only come from an engine equipped with mapped electronic ignition and a knock sensor.
That will change the timing to prevent knock, pre-ignition, with lower octane fuel, impairing perfomance in the process but preserving the probably
turboed engine.
A straight, mechanical or electronic but not map-ignitioned engine, as most Triumphs will have, cannot benefit from increased octanes. All that can
happen is that the engine is less likely to suffer engine destroying knock/pre-ignition when pushed hard.
Design your engine - ie shave the head to achieve a CR of 11 or more - and you will be at risk of suffering this with 95 octanes, as long as engine
breathing can achieve anything like the theoretical CR. If 99 octane is to become widley available then that will be possible, but until then us
outside the South East will have to make do with octane booster.
And what about all the other things that the fuel PLCs put in petrol? There has been wide crtiticism of cheap supermarket petrol that lacks
detergent and other additives. Octanes are not the only fruit!

UK spec GT6's were designed to run on 5 star which was 100 RON so a 99 RON alternative has got to be a better option than the standard Super
unleaded (97 RON) or Optimax (98 RON) even if it is a modern fuel without lead and with the various additives. Not sure what other Triumphs
were designed for 5 Star, I'm presumeing that Vitesses and the 6 cylinder TRs were also designed for 5 star?
I currently run my GT6 (fitted with an unleaded head) with the timing set at 6 deg BTDC when running on Optimax, the setting in the Triumph
workshop manual is 10 degress BTDC but of course this was when 5 star 100 RON was available. What I'm hoping is that with 99 RON I will be able
to advance the ignition a bit to say 8 deg BTDC or so. This is closer to how Triumph designed the Engine to be configured so it ought to be
more efficient and therefore give both improved economy and performance.
Supermarket fuels may or may not be inferior to the premium brands, but the good news is that if Tesco have recognised a market for 99 RON then
the premium brands are also likely to follow suit and introduce petrol at this grade. I believe 99 RON is readily available in many European
countries, eg Germany. Certainly some performance German cars eg BMWs, Porsches etc are designed to run on petrol up to 99 RON as are some far
eastern performance cars eg Suburu's.

It does make a difference simply adding higher quality fuel regardless of engine spec....Pickup, idle, town, progression, cruising - a
difference in all between 95 and Optimax + Putoline Booster. Sure no more power without modification but boy does it make a difference
everywhere else! 95 runs like ****.

Remember that you car was designed to run on higher octain fuel - 97 (4*) for the Spitfire/all 4 pots? and 99 (5*) for the GT6/all 6
pots?
You may well just be giving your engine the octane rated fuel it was designed to run on.
One quick aside, Optimax is rhumored to be leaving our pumps - replaced by 100 RON V-Power.

I agree the quality of the fuel as in the 1960's is important, you have to shop around and find the best fuel for your engine. Its all
to do with the flash point and the amount the compressing the fuel will take. The ratio between these two important factors can be
different for the same octane rating. The right fuel will not increase the power above the original rating, but it will help the engine
achieve it and not reduce the power.
Its all basic stuff thats been around for many years.
Hope we get some of the fuel in the Newbury area!

At what price? given that some garages are reported selling unleaded at 103 pence per litre whats the price of 99 / 100 going to
be?

If its anything like our local garage that sells 4* leaded petrol (Yes some garages still do it) At &163;5.50 a
gallon...
Thats &163;1.21 per litre.........
I nearly had to arrange a bank loan for a tank full of Optimax @ &163;1.009...
The sooner the Farmers and Haulage firms get onto the Government to lower the Fuel Duty the better, even if it
causes petrol shortages, it cant keep rising at this rate, its added another &163;30 to my monthly fuel bill in the last
few months...

I'm not sure (the rate of) fuel duty has actually risen recently. The fact that a barrel of crude oil (NYMEX) has gone from
$43 to $65 + change in the last 12 months is the main reason for current high pump prices. Back at the start of 2003,
before we went around invading major oil producing countries a barrel was selling in the low $30's.

At Silverstone they were selling 4* (with lead) for &163;1.25 per litre and 100 octane unleaded for &194;&163;1.85 per
litre - I still nearly bought some

&163;1.85 a litre... WOW!
There was a very good article in teh Telegraph last saturday (I only get it for the partisan Motoring section!) which
explained why the price is still rocketting.
All to do with teh Yanks buying all our crude at high prices, then renting all the tankers to get it over the pond.
We now have to pay 4 or 5 times the rental cost on the tankers....
It is good to know that prices have hit &163;4 a gallon in some parts of the States, now they know what it feels
like!

Yep, both the Chinese and the Yanks are buying like there's no tomorrow. Probably if they get to fighting over the oil
reserves there WILL be no tomorrow.
