im thinking of buying a complete stage 2 (fast road, sorry james

) mk3 spit engine, but i do not have an exchange unit, except a rough
looking 1500 fwd unit with the sump and flywheel, missing any suggestions, who to consider,
or even, would it be more economical for me to buy a s/h engine to re-build to this spec myself, using replacement head, camshaft, ect.
and where shall i start with that option?
cheers

Either way, you are going to need an 'exchange' unit, or a unit to work on...
If you are a proficient engine builder then by all means do this yourself, if you have a day job then you should expect it to take a while.
Then, if you have to cash, you can go to a professional. Depending on where in the country you are there are many of these dotted about.

A secondhand engine in unknown condition should be very cheap indeed, just a matter of finding one. If you're not tuning to original spec then a 13/60
GE prefix engine should be perfect for your needs, all of the big bits being the same. Cam and breathing will be dealt with in your stage 2
modifications,
Cheers,
Bill.
