Thats on the starter motor itself right?, does that mean a new one or can it be repaired?..-

Oh yes - the starter motor on a 6-cyl has the solenoid built in to the starter itself...
It's the cylinder that sits on top of the motor. I believe you can buy new ones - I just checked Rimmer and they sell them as separate items (though expensive as always)
Before you go replacing that - hot wire the solenoid to see if its not the wire that goes from the ignition switch. Make sure the car is out of gear and the ignition is off and you use suitably large cable - 30amp should be ok.
If that still doesnt work - get the whole starter out of the car and bench test it.
Im sure someone who knows much more than me will be able to help here! Im just using the powers of deduction to figure out whats up with it!

One other thing to check, is the battery earth lead OK? If when you try to crank the starter, the dash lights go out, then look at the earth lead as well-

I'd check all the battery connections. A poor connection might still provide power for lights etc but not throw the starter. I had a mini that always suffered from loose terminals and that is exactly what happened!-

Hooraaayyyyy, what a plum, i've had a clutch fitted and on inspection guess what, one of the wires was off,thanks anyway,you lot are a great help,its so releaving to know you are out there,cheers, john..

ok ok - 6cyl 2.5 lumps... I forgot my mates Gitfire was a 2.5 and not a 2... and that has a solenoid on the starter...
