    Hugh, thought that there was an actual breather down on the block somewhere, some sort of pressure valve.

      Calvin i thought this was only on the 1200 engines and it was blanked off on later engines?

        Maybe Aaron, i have not a clue, so any ideas why i got oil coming out of the dipstick?
        all help appreciated.

          The crankcase breather on the 1500 engine is via the rocker cover as stated. The 1200 engines just had a pipe from the crank-case open to the atmosphere, as regulations tightened this was blocked off and the emissions led through to be burnt via the carbs.
          
          As for oil coming out of the dipstick.... assuming its not overfilled it may suggest excessive piston blow-by from worn rings/bores. Do you have problems with smoking exhaust, excessive oil consumption, piston slap?

            if the felt seal is not on the dipstick oil can splash out, try running the engine with the dipstick removed and you will get covered. Otherwise it is possibly overfilled or as previously said, worn bores/rings.
            However, there should be a breather on the rocker cover. If there isn't, then that would explain it, or if the breather was blocked (any crank pressure would have to come out the dipstick). The mesh stuff can get gunged up, and is a pain to get out or clean. Left to soak in petrol/celly thinners etc helps a lot if it does need cleaning.
            
            And good to finally meet you at stafford! Totally forget to give you a spin in the spit (beer haze) so next time.....
