Just started a night class in welding last night - v impressed with MIG, copes easily with reasonably thick metal (3mm). Orignally thought I'd have to use
arc on the spit chassis - how thick is that metal? What power off-the-shelf MIG would cope with it?
Anyone recommend a brand of weld-thru primer? I see Frost do it - is the stuff in general any good?

I use a 90amp gasless mig (gasless more expensive consumables but very easy to use), copes with everything. The metal chassis on a spit is surprisingly
thin metal, can easily hacksaw through it, brackets attached to the chassis are a lot thicker and gives the 'impression' that the chassis is thick
metal.
metal at night school is new and clean, welding your spit will be a different matter! - make sure area is very clean, electric welders don't like
paint, most of your time will be taken up cleaning the area to be welded.
weld through primer does exactly what it says on the tin - welds through leaving the weld and immediate area around it bare to rust - it does have
limited merits - you pays your maney and takes your choice....

I've also got some welding to do on my vitesse chassis. I've read in my restoration manual that the main chassis rails are 16 gauge sheet steel (approx
1.5mm thick), the strength comes from the box section I suspect.
I've also bought weld thru primer from halfords, but it was quite pricey. I guess the main benefit is you can prime the inside surface that won't be
accessible after you've welded it.
