hi all
found my water pump to be leaking last week so i took it off. upon doing so two of the bolts came off easily and on one of them only the nut came off, the
screw part was in very tight, but i thought that wouldnÂ’t matter and it really helped lining up when the new pump arrived. about ten minuets
ago i decided to attach the new pump. i put all the bolts back in and tightened things up. as i was doing the final tighten i noticed that the bolt where
the screw had not come out would not tighten and the more i turned it the slacker it became. now the nut will turn relatively easy in either direction with
the use of a spanner, however regardless of turns will not tighten or un tighten (ie it wonÂ’t come off but it wonÂ’t go on any
tighter). what have i done?

Sounds like it has stripped the thread Mark, hopefully the thread on the stud.If the stud has stripped you'll need a new one and hope that the internal
thread is'nt stripped,if it is then you can either helicoil it or retap it and fit a larger stud.

Vise grips, pull and twist at the same time.Try it first...if it does'nt work it'll be time for the "technical stuff"..............

Halfords, machine mart etc do a good stud extractor set. It's metric but I've found the 6mm one also does 1/4", 8mm does 5/16", 10mm
does 3/8" and 12mm does 1/2". This will gets studs out when mole grips don't. It costs about £25 and is one of those tools
that you won't use a lot but you're really glad you had it when you do.
Squirt a bit of WD40 at the stud where it goes in first.

thanks for all your help guys,
bought a nut-splitter from halfords, which removed the nut. then a bit of WD40 and a pair of cheap mole grips got the rest out of
the water pump housing. just need to order some new bolts and job done!
thanks again.
