    I seem to recall that when I last did this job I used an old fasioned bike spanner.

      make one... hour with a hacksaw and some files will do the job

        I was going to suggest an angle grinder, but there are plenty of tool supply companies out there who supply such things.
        
        such as Facom, or Sykes-Pickavant etc

  I have a 22mm flat spanner that's about 3mm thick that could be edged out to 25.4mm

    The last time I did anything like this ,I bought a standard spanner slapped it on a magnetic base surface grinder(any local tool maker) and let the machine do the rest . Took minutes .Looks like a professional job and Ideal for the future.

  Go to your local bike shop and ask for a cone spanner - I think 1" equates to 19mm??? Cones are the bearings on bike wheels, you need a spanner to set the load, in a similar way to taper roller bearings on our cars.

    19 mm will be too small.An inch is just over 24 mm,a bit of "doctoring" may be required.

        Hi all,
        
        Thanks for the advice. Following on from this, I now have a piece of 3mm steel to make a spanner out of and have also been kindly lent a spanner that Anglian Triumph Services use when they do it (thanks guys!).
        
        Sadly, the overdrive problem was superceded by a more serious (but probably linked) disaster on the way home on Sunday night in the form of a sudden loss of power and a rather terminal sounding rattle coming from the (supposedly 4-years-since-recon) engine. Needless to say the night ended on a flatbed breakdown truck.
        
        For those who notice these things, my first post, about four months ago was "How do I change a headline bulb?" By the end of this weekend I hope to have removed the cylinder head (I've already had the rocker cover off and can't see any problems there). This is a slightly steeper learning curve than I'd planned! Fortunately, I'm going to be getting some help on this one as it is a tad daunting on your own!
        
        In the mean time, while I put things right (I hope) in the engine, I'll probably fix the solenoid although it could be a while before I get the car moving fast enough to test it out.
        
        The challenge is to be back on the road for the BMC event in Peterborough's Ferry Meadows on August 7th - here's hoping...
