On my GT6 MkII there is a square sump plug, and I can't find a tool/socket anywhere that will fit it. Does anyone know where I can get such a tool and what size/type it is?

Also are all GT6 sump plug originally square?

Yup, they are all square.... I normally use an adjustable spanner (10") to free it but it should be very tight. Alternatively, you could try a (ahem) metric spanner

Yep, sadly it's usually a metric spanner does the trick. This is what comes of measuring oil in litres instead of pints.
For a replacement plug I'm still singing the praises of the magnetic ones currently available - for a start they're hexagon shaped and come off using a socket... check the next Courier to see what they pick up from the oil..!!

I usually use a ring key (the "circle" end of a combination spanner) to undo the plug. Although it can be difficult to get at because of the chassis, a bi-hex socket WILL fit the plug. The 12 points of the ring key or of a socket will accommodate both square and hexagonal bolts. (Presumably triangular and 12 sided too!) Don't know what size, as the across-flats distance is different between square and hexagons, but if you can get a socket in, try all the possibilities, imperial, metric, BSW etc that you can get your hands on.
The plug square is slightly tapered so any spanner or socket must be driven WELL on to grip properly.
You MAY find that the METRINCH type of spanner has some benefits as they are meant to drive on the flat rather than the corner of a bolt, but I can't say I've tried it. I have had success with truly obstinate plugs with a long Stilson type of adjustable spanner as these grip ever tighter as you apply force but modern far-east stilson type wrenches are nowhere near as good in that repect as my great grandfather's ones I inherited. Worth trying though as they are also good for plumbing jobs around the house!
What we really need is a square drive spanner rather like the brake adjuster tool for the rear brakes. My brake adjusting spanner has two square holes, but the larger is nowhere big enough for a sump plug. Maybe bigger ones are available for commercial vehicles or agricultural machinery?

Yep 7/16 or 11mm open ender always does the trick on my GT6 on the square plugs on the sump, the gearbox and the diff.

I do remember many years ago when I had a Spitfire 1500 and replaced the engine with a recon that the sump plug was done up so tight and had also been painted over and I just couldn't get it to budge and it started to get rounded off. This was a real pain as I wanted to change the oil having completed running it in. Then I saw an advert for one of the local tyre places in the local paper, they had a special offer advertised and were doing an oil chnage service with Duckhams oil for about the same price as a gallon of oil was in Halfords. I went along and gave them the hassle of getting the sump plug undone and supplied them with a nice new sump plug from my local spares supplier to replace the rounded off one. It also meant that I didn't have the mucky job of disposing of the old oil

If you tried that nowadays, they'd probably suck the old oil out with one of the big hoover like contraptions, pocket the free sump plug and look smug as you drove off...

I did this on the GT6 - get someone else to remove the plug. Then it's them waving the blow torch around not me. That was the 2nd oil change. The 1st one I did by siphoning the oil out of the dipstick hole. More recently on another car I welded an old wheelnut to the drain plug. That worked well, and it's reusable so oil changes are easier in the future.

They are available in any size Chris,i bought mine abroad but 'im sure they can be got on the internet here.They take the plug out very easily.As previously mentioned ,the plug is tapered,just tap one on and wind it out.

A 10" spanner, Nig? What size is your sump plug????? I have visions of a manhole cover... changing the oil by putting up a stripy tent and two orange cones....
