Wooden/Metal/block Garages?

Many years ago, I added a garage to my existing one, for the Triumph. The new(ish) one is made of breeze blocks, so the basic method is fine. I didn't build it myself, but from that experience I would suggest:
1/ take the opportunity to add lots of storage and workshop space if that is possible.
2/ Include an RSJ (Rolled Steel Joist) in the roof design, even if the rest is wood, to provide support for an engine hoist. Very useful!
3/ Include a modern 'earth leak current' (or some such) device in the electrical supply, to protect yourself. Fit more lights than you think you need, or at least a supply that will take them later.
4/make sure the floor is dampcoursed, and leave it to mature for six months before painting it with floor paint. Cleaning up spills and general dirt is so much easier.
5/ Don't forget planning permission. If you already have a garage there, this should be easy, but if you do plan the palace I describe, it might be a bit bigger - mine was!

Please.. no more torture Adrian...
Having a garage would make life 10 times easier for me...
Just being able to leave the car apart over night... being able to have your tools on the walls - not having to clear away at the end of every day... just being able to take my time over things - that's what I want - currently, working on the car ends up being a mad rush the whole time...
To be honest at this point in time I am sick and tired of working on my car - everything seems to be a chore... I've put up with it for almost 3 years now... it gets tiresome...
When driving in my car I actually check out peoples garages - oh the anger when I see them open and filled with crap...
How I long for a garage/workshop of my own...

It must be a real pain in the arse not being able to leave it in bits(mines been without engine for two weeks now) overnight,i really don't think i would bother if i did'nt have a garage.
Garages filled with crap? The garage is the tidiest room in our house.

Not leaving it in bits is the worst thing - I can't prep something and then leave it over night to carry on work the next day. Everything has to be done there and then... I've changed an engine in the pouring rain and done a clutch in the dark...
I have got depressed about the situation myself - and wondered why I bothered...
Most people it seems use their garage as extra storage for their junk - non-car people that is...
My garage would be immaculate I think... after being so used to not having one.
I could rent a garage - but they're ridiculously expensive and few and far between here in London.
I do have a (shared) driveway around at my gran's house that I can use - and in fact also a garage to store stuff - it's too small (wouldnt be able to get out of the car once in it) to bother to clear out and use to work on the car. Plus it would need clearing out - and that involves family politics...
One day, one day... what I really want is a huge garage with living space on top

now don't think I am taking the mickey....have you seen some of these tent-like things? They are like a muckle-big rigid green tent that articulate like an armadillo over a car??? Not like a garage, I know, but at least will keep you dry while working. A friend is also restoring an old tractor in a mini poly-tunnel and he intends to use that in garden after.
Adrian, your garage sounds better than my house!
I am counting the nuber of breeze blocks I have left, approx a thousand, so looking like a rendered block garage.

I have seen those things - and they do look tempting - the problem is that I have two options for working on the car - outside the house in the road - which is on a hill and has a severe camber - the other is on a driveway which is shared - and the neighbour is always coming in and out.
I have been tempted by a marquee for the summer - to at least keep the sun off - and the rain

Strangely, your problem came up on the triumphspitfire.com US site recently. The solution there was for several guys to get together and hire an industrial unit. (I know - in America, the land of the three car garage! but true).
In the megaloposises, your problem cannot be unique. How about a poll at your Area group?

Now then John......................James is upset enough.......don't rub it in............James ,if you really want an overhead multipoint airline,i can get them cheapish for you,and compressers,and air tools,generators etc etc.

I might be looking for a compressor - when I can afford it - but I need to sort out the electrics in my garage first... they are ever so slightly dodgy... I went to wire in a strip light - and found the wiring to be that lead type! The junction box is prehistoric... very scary... needs a rewire...
Supposedly there was some sort of game on tonight... I hear "we" won too...

If your building your own garage Jackie,however many sockets and lights you think you need ,put more in.And get a 30 amp direct feed put in,welders,compressers etc,it's so much easier to do whilst building it than after its finished,believe me i learnt the difficult way,again.
Will phone you today re hardtop,can do it this week.

If you demolish your garage to zero you may have to reapply for planning and building regs
IF you have had to get planning permission before it now means any major works has to go through planning.
Even jobs that dont need building regs sometimes need planing eg conservatories
My advise keep as mutch standing classify it as general repairs CHEERS RAY J

In addition to planning permission and building regs you may need conservation area consent. (if you live somewhere old or pretty) The whole processs takes months.
I first put plans in mid February and it was not until last week the last hundle was crossed. If you talk to your local planning dept you should find them helpful but slow.

I have been following this debate with interest and am surprised that no-one has yet come out strongly in favour of wooden structures as opposed to
concrete/metal and so on. Back in the 80's I had a sectional concrete one and I think I might as well have left the Vitesse in rain as rust seemed to
thrive on the atmosphere inside. Last winter I built a wooden garage (17ft x 15Ft) of my own design for my latest Vitesse as I couldn't afford much
else ; the kits tend to be flimsy and expensive . I have used paving slabs over a ballast base with a damproof membrane for the floor and condensation
is minimal. Wooden garages can also be aesthetically pleasing if you are concerned about how your garden will look. Andy.

Timber is a great insulator . Have you thought of lining it internally with 50mm celotex insulation panel superb stuff. keeps heat out in summer and keeps heat in in winter nothing better on market today

Thanks for the tip, I might consider insulation at some later date but currently all spare cash is going on the Vitesse. I expect it might be fiddly to fit now that all the shelving is in position. I haven't experienced excessive heat in there yet despite outside temps of 26 degrees a couple of weeks ago ; there is a lot of ventilation via the eaves.
Retaining heat in the winter might also necessitate reducing the ventilation which is debatable.

The only reason i don't like timber garages is security.If i take my crappy old vitesse out of the garage i still have a lot of accumulated tools etc etc.They would cost a fortune to replace.I feel safer with a block built gararge with steel doors and barred windows even though i have additional insurance specifically for the garage.Spend 1 hour and work out how much money you have tied up in your garage.
