Hi can anyone tell me if a diff (complete axel) off a 2500s will fit onto my 2000 mk2 as my diff is whining more than the missus at the moment and a 2500s
is the only replacement resonably priced i can find at the moment.

It should physically fit, but the ratios may be different. If this is the case you will need to change the speedometer to the same as the car that the
diff was intended for or at least get your speedo recalibrated.

I would think long and hard before fitting a diff from a 2.5S.
This would give you a final drive ratio of 3.45:1 as against 3.7:1 for a 2000 diff. A standard Triumph 2000 would have trouble pulling itself along
with that high a ratio. For that matter, a standard tune 2.5S has trouble pulling itself along on that ratio. I should know, it was one of the main
reasons I worked on the engine of my old 2.5S.
2.5 S Manual with overdrive: 26mph/1000rpm in 4th overdrive
2000 Manual with overdrive: 23.8mph/1000rpm in 4th overdrive
The net result would be you spending a lot of time in 3rd overdrive rather than 4th.

Clive, isn't O/D 3rd more or less the same ratio as 4th?

Mark, on a 2000, overdrive 3rd is 3.99:1
direct 4th is 3.70:1
or in other words at the red line 5800 rpm, 51 mph and 77 mph respectively.

So a "true" 6 speed 'box then?
