Spotted about 10 miles away, not had a really good look underneath, under the bonnet etc yet as not been able to make contact.

MK1 2000 Saloon. Scruffy interior, stonechips around the nose (but with sound metal underneath) looks pretty "straight" on the whole with nice chrome but could do with a respray- not rusty but faded. The only thing really to see is a rust hole fairly low down on the o/s outer sill, just above a chrome finisher maybe about halfway along underneath the door. It seems sound behind and all around and doesn't look like it would be too difficult to plate unless anyone knows any different? Probably no MOT as the tax ran out last month.

Assuming there's no other rot and that the greasy bits are sound, what would be a fair price bearing in mind the need of a respray and good interior to make it tidy? The thing is I know the guy that owns it, or at least he did a year ago when it first appeared- had some Herald bits off him last year. Also for sale a couple of Rovers, a Wolsely 1500 etc etc etc-either his missus has thrown a wobbler or he's kicked the bucket, rather than there being something badly wrong with the car as a reason for selling it. One of these people that collects cars and never gets round to sorting them, we all know one I'm sure!

Hi Dan, going up in the world are we? On big triumphs, be very wary of any rust in the sills. There is an inner, a center castle panel and then the outer and rust can be a bugger to get out properly and v. expensive unless doing it yourself. Other than that, the condition of the wheel arches, wings, front valance and nose cone on Mk1s is vital. Bare in mind that replacement panels are ruinously expensive for these cars so do be careful. having said that, we have been running them for years and if you can keep the rust bug at bay, they make a great everyday car and happy in today's traffic.

  Hi Clive, not for me but the old man-neither of his Acclaims are going to see another MOT due to rust in the inner sills (wot no inner sills?) so looking out for interesting wheels. Haven't had a really good poke yet but it looks like it's just that hole in the outer sill which is hopefully localised enough to patch-apart from this one spot tapping it anywhere gives a nice ringing sound rather than the nasty dull thud of filler/extensive rot/bodged cover sills. The rest of the panels look pretty good, no, actually, excellent but time will tell-would never buy a car now without getting right underneath and having a damn good poke at everything! Of course the first thing to do is check the insurance situation..! At least it isn't a rush job as the one Acclaim has MOT till Feb 07 and then of course there's always the dear old Herald with its new and ruinously expensive engine so hopefully even we can find a roadworthy car in the time!
