2000 crank - different from GT6?

Posted By : Colin Lindsay, 21-Oct-2004, 08:56pm

Having banjaxed two gearboxes now by trying to fit them to my GT6 Mk1 engine - formerly Triumph 2000 Mk1 - I know that something is preventing the engine and bellhousing from joining properly unless half an inch is planed off the gearbox input shaft. I've discovered by dint of dismantling the whole damn thing and comparing it to a scrap Mk2 engine lying behind my garage that firstly, the flywheel is enormous!! Far bigger than the GT6 model, and secondly - the crankshaft protrudes about an inch farther out of the engine backplate than the GT6 one. The photo shows the GT6 crank and how far it protrudes back. This would explain the fact that it keeps eating gearbox input shafts - I think... I had thought all 2.0 litre cranks were the same, and thus since all gearboxes were outwardly the same it shouldn't make any difference to the length of the tip. Can anyone confirm this?
