From what I recall of my dad's 2000 Mk1, the aerial was fitted into the front wing from above. There was a nut at the base of the aerial. When
undone, this allowed the aerial to drop into the wing a little, and this allowed you to reposition the oblong washer-thingy which went acorss the
bottom of the hole in the wing, but when angled up, would come up through the round hole in the wing. Pretty dreadful description, but best I can
do; a picture would explain much better, but have none to hand. All I can say, if you can undo the nut (which might be hexagon, or might be a pair
of drive holes requiring a special spanner or maybe circlip pliers?) the way to get the aerial out will become obvious. The only awkward bit is the
cable to the radio. It's easy enough to pull out, but to thread it back................................
If you are definitely throwing away the old aerial, I'd cut the cable off at the base of the aerial, DO NOT DROP IT, and attach it to the new
aerial's lead and use that to draw the new lead into the car.
As for the size of mounting hole, my guess is that a 1970s radio cutout will be smaller than modern stereos, but can only suggest you measure it.
I'd be confident that you could enlarge the mounting hole to accommodate a modern system.
