My Courier collection goes back ten years plus, and would be an invaluable resource instead of a bookshelf ground anchor if I could find articles that I can remember reading, but cannot remember when. The Club Technical Index is available for a paltry &163;3, but I would have to buy a new one every year.
I don't know if the Club makes a great deal from the sale of these, but wouldn't it be a valuable benefit of membership to be able to access it online? With regular updates? Monthly?

Courier Back Issue index online... that old chestnut... the ball's in court of the HQ on that one. It came up (again) at the AGM back in March.

Technically, it's a piece of cake. I'm just waiting for Mr Muggleton and Co. to pull their fingers out....

We are currently updating the Tech directory to bring it up to date. Once this is completed I plan to supply you with pdf's of the pages. So you will be able to download them from the site.
I think the ideal solution would be a searchable index and on-line order form for the relevant back issue.
For those who have many years of magazines, remember that a yearly index is printed in the June edition of the Courier. This lists all the previous years articles.

If somebody has the time and the inclination and a full set of back copies, they are welcome to produce an electronic list.

We do hold a considerable number of back copies at HQ, and it could be a good source of revenue for the Club if we can sort out a proper on line ordering system.

The only problem is the cost for sending back copies in the post. One of two is fine but larger quantities do cost a wedge to post.

If anybody has any sensible suggestions I would be happy to hear from them.

Well, we've got the full set of back copies (only missing Newsletter No.3 from December 1977!) but I'm afraid I'd have a bit of a problem finding spare time to put together any sort of electronic index. Anyway, presumably the place to start that would be with the current Technical Index.

One possibility for back issues, especially with online ordering, could be to offer a pdf for specific articles, perhaps for a nominal sum such as 50p or &163;1. Any thoughts on that?

Yes, a searchable index or even a database would be nice, but the index exists already - as John says it is published every year in the June edition.

OK, it's crude, there are some glitches that need sub-editing, but this took maybe five minutes with a scanner and an OCR program (TextBridge, since you ask) It took me longer than that to find the right settings, but once going, the whole thing could be online in a day.

You could provide each year online, or even as a downloadable Word file, that could be searched with the Find command. If I can do this - and I think that little green men do the writing behind the screen - surely you can!

Strange name,Bishops Finger,reminds me of a certain Blackadder sketch,whats it taste like then?Or is it one of those "real Ales" that is brewed so strong that it is revolting?

Years ago we lived 2 doors away from a homebrew shop .I brought 6 bottles of this beer for me and my 2 mates drank it at about 2pm woke10pm .It completly blanked out our memory

When i went back next day she pointed out a warning label below the bottle rack

Getting back on track (I wish), the point is - I didn't type a letter of that index. The scanner copies it as an image and the OCR converts it into Word form. This is standard, even old technology - how else would I use it?

I hope we get a Club response soon!

Quite apart from the work to do it, this sort of thing needs maintaining. (Yes, Craig?) The Club owns the index, publishes it and employs people to do so.
I had hoped that my demonstration that this is quick, cheap and easy to do would stimulate the Club to respond by offering this as a benefit of membership. Perhaps after the weekend.

There will be an online database. Write access to the database will be granted by username/password.

View access to the database will be available to all.

Members will be able to query the database either by topic/keyword or date of publication.

Once up and running the index can easily be updated each month.
