As some have suggested, the Stag was originally designed around the straight six with the V8 to come along a little later to add further glitz
to the range. The bodyshell, suspension and transmission were all based on saloon components, so there should be a good deal of
interchangeability, at least in terms of physical connections (the Stag components may be uprated or stronger).
The weight of the straight six and iron blocked Stag are similar, so I doubt the springs have been changed. (The alloy blocked Rover V8 is
substantially lighter, so the front springs SHOULD be changed when converting). In any case, it should be a simple task to fit a pair of new
Stag springs to the car if needed.
I also doubt the gearbox has been changed, but if it HAS, then you would probably need a genuine Stag box to go with the engine. The box in the
Stag is stronger than the saloon box if I recall correctly. (Above comments apply to manual boxes; any BW35 or 65 should be able to cope with
the Stag output in ordinary use).
Swapping engineas and boxes should be relatively straightforward as the mounting points are very similar, but it's always the odd LITTLE
differences which cause the most grief!
As to whether or not to buy, I suppose it may depend on why you want a Stag. If it is primarily the style of the car, and it's excellent blend
of refined soft top and hard top luxury coupe, then the 2.5 engine will still move the car along well enough and smoothly enough to be
enjoyable. If however you are buying it for the extra performance and the amazing exhaust "woofle" (no other word for it!) then only the V8
will do. That said, if the bodywork is worth the money and the transmission and suspension is sound, then changing to the V8 is feasible and
could be cost effective if the original price is right.

Stag gearboxes are not the same as saloon or TR boxes. They have different ratios and are uprated in some areas.

It's worth mentioning that £2k is very cheap for a good Stag.
