General Stag messages

My car has recently returned to the road after I rebuilt the engine. First times out I was obviously concentrating on how the engine was doing but after a while I have noticed a whine form the back which is clearly the diff.

Within a 1,000 miles the diff is very noisy indeed. A recon is several hundred pounds from James Paddock and others. Is it possible to have an exchange or rebuild cheaper? Do you have any other suggestion. Just spent a fortune on the engine and ancilliaries so this is one expense I am keen to avoid!

Make sure it actually is the diff that's noisy. I've just changed mine only to find it was a wheel bearing instead...

It sounded like the diff (other owners agreed with me). This was on a 2000, but I think it's the same underneath...? The bearing felt OK on the car - no play and not changing pitch/volume on corners. The wear was obvious once I'd got the hub out (can feel some square ball bearings inside). One quick change and an instant cure. Cheaper too! Got to be worth a try.

PS There is oil inside the diff? Seals can fail after the car's been stood. BTDT.

Sorry to be slow to follow up.

I did wonder about the wheel bearings and will check that. In fact I have sourced a guaranteed used unit (unusual I am told as they all get reconditioned!). I can return if need be.

Thing is mine has been noisy for sometime but after a run of 100 miles was really noisy! Checked the oil level and you are right - it seems to have lost its oil whilst stationary for 2/3 years. Should have checked I know but it was probably spoilt before then and before I got the car. That's my story anyway and makes feel less guilty!

Will follow up this diff change with a report for Nicks Stag Register reports.

I had an unexpected day off yesterday, and on the spur decided to take the old diff off. Took about an hour as you have to take the exhaust off in part and undo all those nuts for the U/J flanges!

My diff seem to be leaking everywhere - sides front and back cover! I drained the oil out and it was black as black.

I then checked for noise and movement compared with the known good one and it does seem clear that it was on its very last legs.

I changed my 2000TC diff in the week for the third time (1st to improve the ratio, 2nd to cure the noise, actually the wheel bearing, 3rd because of excessive leaks, 1 pint per week) I now have two spare diffs, when I can cure the leaky one.

The exhaust is not a problem on the 2000.

When I had a 2500TC laid up for a while, the diff seals leaked so much when I eventually moved it that there was an oil trail on the road! Maybe an issue for summer only cars?

While the diff is out, check the wheel bearings if you can and regrease the splines in the axle shafts, and examine the uj's. I like finding work for others!

I did the change yesterday and took the Stag out for a summer day roof down test drive

and all seems to be well. I can not hear the diff at all and the car feels totally different. Must have been vibrating a bit before but now all is smooth. Woill check for any possible oil leaks - it be a used diff but so far all is great.

I checked the splines etc and all seems well except for a split inner boot which I will replace when it comes. UJs seem good too.

I took the opportunity to waxoyle underside as well not that it needed it. I am very pleased with the condition of the under body hardly a mark on it. Previous owner obviously cared. Even the mounting plate was clean and rust free but I gave it a coat of smoothrite just the same.

I took some photos etc during the work and will send off to Nick Vass for his Stag register report. He should appreciate an article.

The old diff was like you described. Leaking all places yet it was fine when I laid the car up 2/3 years ago.
