Hi James,
Stags are good cars, don't let press reports put you off them. What I meant by not impressed with them is,I find them too comfortable
compared to the mk3 Spit I also own. I drive a big Volvo everyday, which supplies all the comfort I like in everyday use. I was trying
to buy a Herald or Vitesse convertible, { for family outings ) but could not find a decent one at the time. The Stag came up so I
induldged.
I prefer driving the Spit, without all the power steering, power brakes et; takes me back to my younger days !!! Wish I'd hung on and
looked around a bit more for Herald/Vittese.
The only real complaint re; Stags is the astronomical price of parts, however if you are like me and shop around and adapt, prices
become o.k. eg; well known supplier-throttle cable £9+, cycle shop £2.80 complete, in stainless steel.
Performance wise Stags are brillient, reasonably economical and comfy; I always describe driving it as like the Volvo with no top on,
appart from the poke, that is!!
regards Mal

I have been reading the meassageboard concerning Stag ownership and can agree with the general sentiment that they are GREAT cars
but do need to be carefully maintained. If you look on page 75 of this months Courier you will see my great friend Peter Johnsons
1977 Stag (Photographed at Stafford this year). I have had the privilege of helping to maintain this vehicle since 1980 when Pete
bought it. It has never overheated:warped its heads:or suffered any unusual malady. It has had regular oil and coolant
changes:timing chains and silicone brake fluid. The car is currently off road for a bare metal respray. Pete tells me he will NEVER
part with his Stag!

They had a bad press when new but I think if you're buying this age of car then the "usual" used car buying examination should
turn up any nasties - I think I would buy piece of mind and get an inspection done by someone "in the know" - the AA or
preferably a trader who could give a bit less general view. Having said that I am usually a poor buyer of used cars as I tend
to let my heart rule my head!

Jason, All,
"Bad press"? More like malignant.
Have you seen page 29 of today's (9/2/3) Sunday Telegraph?
There is a two column advertsiment, bottom left, for the Small Ads section of the Motoring Telegraph on Saturday. "Time to
change your car?" it says, with a picture of a car that looks not just worn out, or even a donor, but TRASHED.
It's a Stag.

Im a 1500 Spit owner myself (inca) however, my dad has a mk2 stag MOD (again inca) ... we like inca in this
household...
In truth i would rather have a stag even if the engine has a few funny designs
The Pros:-
-Power assisted steering
-Triumph V8
-Factory fitted "T" top (spits with roll bars look odd and un orrigional ... even if u roll the thing chances are your
gonna get killed)
-Exhaust note ... rawr!!
-4 seats ... sorta
feels kind of strange playing up the stag when im a spit owner but had it not been for the astronomical insurance ...
apparently insurance companys dont trust 17 yr olds with V8's for low premium even if you love the thing enough to stay
5 mph below the speed limit.
*sigh* I'll get one eventually
- Jonathan
Triumph:- to succeed againsed the odds ( the name sais it all)
