I have an oil leak, it is not coming out of the sump gasket, but it seems, seeping out between the front engine plate and the block just above the sump on
the drivers side,
what is leaking and what do i need to buy if i am going to take that plate off to have a look, gaskets/oil seals etc?
thanks all.

If it's coming from behind the engine front plate then you'll need the usual stock of tools plus a new set of bottom end gaskets and a new engine front
plate (I'm guessing it's bent).

Agreed - assuming you've checked that the bolts holding the front plate to the block haven't just worked loose? If so, a nip-up may be all that's
needed.
If you do have to take the front plate off, the timing cover and crankshaft pulley will have to come off too. The crank pully bolt can be VERY
tight- make sure you can shift it before you start. Also make sure you get a new crank seal with your gaskets. Finally, if there is any sign of
timing chain rattle, this would the ideal time to change it.......
Hope this helps.
Cheers

right,
had the pulley off, the timing chain cover off, helicoiled the allloy sealing block put it all together and did a shakedown run, the oil then poured
out of the seal between the front engine plate and the block, what next?
i assume that
1) i should replace the gasket between the block and the front plate,
2) i should check the front plate for splits and warping
3) i should join the greens and drive a car that is made out of celery string.
your thoughts Please?
Frustratedly, Calvin

umm if the bolt on the bottom of the timing cover was too long it can bend the sandwich plate before it strips the sealing block

Calvin,
Speak nicely to the Noise scrutineer and he'll stick his wand up your exhaust.

(Sigh. And I thought he was such a nice boy.)
