General Spitfire messages

Hi,

I've been searching for a MkIV or 1500 Spitfire for a while now and am getting very near to losing complete hope in the whole thing - I shall explain...

Being a poor student I can only afford to spend Â£1500 or thereabouts, which I know and have been told is not a great amount of money for a Spit, but unfortunately although I have a loan and a job bringing in money, leaving it 6 months is not going to get me any more money: I desperately want a Spitfire for my 1st car and I can't see me buying one for a long time if i don't get onto the ladder, even if with that sort of budget it is on the very bottom rung.

I've been looking regularly on the classifieds here, Autotrader and other places like that, and until recently there's been a few Spits (1500s more than IVs) for sale - unfortunately, my dad being my dad he wouldn't really consider looking for one until he properly understood the Triumph thing (he has an emmmgeee, so he knows a fair amount about classics, but wanted to get familiar with the Spit too). Anyways, recently there was a Triumph show at Donnington and he went to have a nosey round and came back quite happy to look for one. Then Sods Law kicked in and since then there hasn't been a single Spit under Â£2000+ advertised in Autotrader. I'm fast losing hope of ever getting a Spitfire and wondered if anyone could give any suggestions of how to increase my chances of finding a suitable Spit, read this and realise they would like to sell their Spitfire to me, a needy needy student (living just outside Stoke in the Midlands!), or just to tell me to forget the idea completely and make me resign myself to the world of horrible normal cars like Cinquecentos or Fiestas... blurghh... I've been working towards this goal for ages now and have got right up to this last hurdle - its so annoying to feel like I might as well not have bothered even thinking about a Spit :o(

Do not despair! Please!

The right car will come along in the end... unfortunatly you just have to wait around... make sure you are looking in *all* the right places... the Courier will be out soon - and there are bound to be some in there. There must be some 1500s in the country - just depends how far you want to travel...

Look at the ones that are 1600 or 1700 pounds... usually people are willing to lower their price....

If a car is far away - then I am sure there are people who will look at one for you... if there are any near me then I would be only too pleased to go and look and report back if its worth coming to look at...

However, saying that, don't buy the first one you look at because you think thats the only one out there... (ask me how I know!)

If it's been your dream to get one of these car's then it will happen - don't cop out and go the banger route... you will always have the gut feeling that you should have a Spitfire...

My budget was 2500. I bought mine for 2400 and it is in a very good condition, even though I saw a lot of junk and actually went to see more than 15 cars. It took me 4 months. I have heard of others looking for over a year to find the right car for their budget but those who are persistent always find one. Keep looking - also in the local paper. A spit is a good car for a student because it is cheap to fix while still being cool. Good luck

Am going to grab my sister and get her to run me up to WHSmith maybe tomorrow, if its weekly the newest issue should be out then.

I think it was the sudden disappearance of Spits for sale on one of my main sources @ Autotrader that worried me - I know there's always an increase in open tops being sold at the end of summer and when there wasn't really any ads I started to worry that I'd missed the boat so to speak, and thought I was going to find it a lot lot harder to find one. I've got a full month till I'm driving (if i pass 1st time!) anyway, and I can use my sisters car after that, so here's hoping I can drop on one sooner rather than later...

Thanks for the offer to look at a car for me James, we'll have to see what happens but its cool that the offers there! Like you said about looking in all the right places, I guess thats why I posted because now I've got a lot more avenues to look down for a car, so thats great!

Bear in mind that if you wait til spring you will probably have a bigger budget and won't have to cope with a classic car winter in your first few months of ownership

Have you been to your local area meeting?

There is normally a very good grapevine about cars for sale in the area that may not get advertised.

Find this paper at your local W H Smith, Tesco or newsagent.

It is an "Autotrader" that specialises in classics and normally has quite a number of Spits at a wide range of prices plus classic car dealers.

Don't despair looking for a Spit save that until you own one!!
