It's the chassis commission number that determins whether your car is a MKIV, 1500 , or whatever. But there is also a simpler way to discover the
truth.
The 1500 and MKIV chassis is basically the same except for one easy to spot difference. The 1500 chassis has a but out in it to allow the exhaust down pipes to fit and the MKIV chassis doesn't.
But then again the two chassis numbers you quote are both 1500 chassis. For the gearbox there is another easy solution, and that is where is reverse gear? if it's near first then its a 1300 gearbox (3-rail) and if its near fourth then its a 1500 gearbox (single rail).
The carbs could be anything but should be HS2s for a 1300 (dashpot is slender), HS4s are for a 1500 engine (much bigger dashpots). There was a 1300 TC but as far as I'm aware the engines are pretty much identical. I don't know much about toledos though, but I do know the Toledo heads will fit the spitfire engines.

Thanx Nigel, your advise confirmed the following. The chassis is 1500, gearbox is 1500, so I assume therefore that its had a 1300 Toledo engine dropped in because the carbs are HS2s. Eventually therefore I will need to obtain a 1500 engine and carbs from somewhere ( at least I can be rebuilding that whilst running the 1300, some consolation). How easy/difficult is it to find a 1500 engine with all the required bits? and what price? I assume that a recon unit is a non starter because I have not got the equivalent to trade with? Sorry I keep asking questions but I'm getting my head around planning finances and time.

I have a 1500 engine from a Dolomite if you are interested. It came with my car (spare) and turns freely. A quick examination under the head shows no worries - scratched bores etc. I havn't run it though.

The 1500 dolomite engine is a straight swap except that the dolomite ring gear is different (on the flywheel). The Dolomite has a pre-engaged starter so you will need to check this first. You may already have apre-engaged started fitted due to the Toledo engine.
The solution would be either to fit the Dolomite starter or change the flywheel (you can get second hand ones for &163;5)
Otherwise your unlikely to find one as quickly

1500 engines... well I have 2 spares...! 2 gearboxes... couple of manifolds... exhaust... all spare... all for sale... easy to come by I would imagine...
I bought an "unknown" engine for 100 quid - which I guess I have now "proven"...

Well there you go - 1500 engines coming out of your ears!!!
I've got a couple too, but I've not even started the rebuild yet - anyway they will be uprated when finished.
There's also one just been posted on ebay for &163;1 (starting), but I'd recommend taking one of these fine chaps up on their offers
