Hi,
fitted the new wheel and boss on my 1976 spitfire however there is a fair amount of friction (grating) between the boss and the metal collar on the
steering column.
Any thoughts on why or a fix??
cheers
Andy

You need to loosen the column slide clamp under the dash and pull the wheel a few mm towards you.
Then tighten it again od course!

Yes.
Loosen the 2 7/16th bolts and then you should be able to pull the centre of the column out a fraction.
Cheers

Don't know how well you know your steering column, but a little explanation might help.
The lower column is a solid metal bar that connects to the steering rack (via the flexible coupling) and pokes through the hole in the
firewall in to the drivers footwell. The 'top' end has a flat machined on to it.
The upper steering column is solid bar at the top but hollow tube at the bottom. There is a window cut in to the bottom end of the tube
section.
The upper column slides over the lower and the window/flat aligned. The safety clamp (parts 5 through 10 on the diagram) clamps the two
together, with the flat part of the clamp (5) laying in the window, stopping the upper/lower columns from rotating independently.
Loosen (not remove) the clamp and 'persuade' the outer column to slide up the inner a bit. Slide the clamp up so it butts against the upper
column and righten the clamp up again.
