I have always read that the chassis should be the same colour as the body. My chassis was actually powder coated in British Racing Green .. looks very
nice

Hi Stefan,
The chassis was built by a sub-contractor and delivered to Standard-Triumph in black enamel. The body and chassis were assembled with doors, bonnet, bootlid etc, when appropriate the hardtop was mounted on spacers to fit a few inches above the body. This entire assembly was then sprayed in the final colour. In theory this means that the entire chassis was painted body colour, except for the areas where paint would not reach because they were obscured by the body.
In practice, the paint coverage was highly variable - only this week I have been told of a Herald, which received virtually no final body colour paint on the chassis, or underside of the body! This is a quality issue, rather than standard or correct practice. Most cars with this little protection of the underside will have completely rotted away by now, it is amazing that any cars like this have survived.

Thanks Bill,
that confirms the story I've heard. So basically, following these steps would come close to the original then?
1. Respraying the chassis in black (primer + top coat)
2. Respraying the underside of the body (primer + top coat in body colour)
3. Mounting body on chassis, then respraying the body and the parts of the chassis sticking out in front (primer + top coat in body colour)
I do like coming close to the original, but without the rust
