As a TSSC member who is rapidly becoming a connoisseur of Cambridgeshire's breakdown services, it has struck me that, while my spit has a loop at the back
for towing other cars (possibly a little ambitious there I fear) there's nothing obvious at the front for the many times it has needed a tow. Since I'm
about to take it in for an engine swap and would rather not pay the £70+ fare each way on the back of a flatbed (for a 1 mile journey!), I
wondered if anyone knows
a) if there should be a towing point at the front and
b) where should it be?!
Many thanks,
James

There is no built in towing poing on a Spit.
Normal practice is to loop the tow rope around one of the main chassis rails, rear of the "Y" where the chassis splits (each side) to attach to the
front cross member (just rear of the bumper).

That's not a towing point at the back, it's for lashing down the car for sending overseas by boat - one or two Spitfires made it as far as the new
world......
On export models there was a modified anti-roll bar mounting, with a loop incorporated into the U-bolt. This took care of the front lashing point.
Be careful when towing that your rope doesn't distort the front valance as it tightens between the two vehicles. I don't think I've ever towed a
Spitfire on a rope, but I have winched a few onto trailers with the cable around a lower wishbone mounting point. Not recommended for even a short road
journey, better to take off the valance and use the front crossmember,
Cheers,
Bill.
