Hey folks,
Just was driving around town, car was cold. Tried to pull away from a roundabout (not particularly vigorously) and got a reasonably loud screech from the
back of the engine / clutch area. It only happened once, but I imagine this is a sign of impending doom.
As far as I know, the engine/gearbox/clutch are original, and have now covered just over 51,000 miles.
Anybody got any ideas as to likely cause, remedy, and how long I'll have in this state?
Thanks!
David

I used to get this before my clutch disintegrated. When I refurbished the clutch I also replaced the spigot bush (which was quite worn and causes
squealing as the power is taken up) - its now OK. Its a tiddly copper bush which supports the gearbox shaft in the centre of the crankshaft.
Unfortunately to get at it you need to take the flywheel off. which means removing and replacing the gearbox/bellhousing and clutch - suggest if its
not too bad you leave it until youre ready to overhaul the clutch.

Thanks for the reply Colin. I was getting a bit worried; a lot of people I showed the car to hadn't experienced that sort of noise before.
Do you think it's doing any damage in its current state? Would it be unwise to do a 200 mile journey in it for example?
I think the clutch is on its last legs anyway (bad vibrations), so I'll take your advice and change the bush when I do the clutch.
Thanks again,
David

Meant to reply to this before. Not sure if I did.
I believe a worn release bearing can cause this noise but I've never had to solve it myself. If you are going to redo the clutch with a
three-piece kit, one of those pieces is a new bearing anyway.
