My rev counter needle bounces around when it gets to 3000rpm. Below 2500 it is stable (i.e. you can tell to within 100rpm), also above 4000rpm. However,
between 3000 and 4000 it bounces around with around a 750 rpm 'sweep'. It is starting to annoy me. I don't know if it is a rev counter problem or a voltage
stabiliser problem. The fuel, temperature, voltage oil pressure and speedo all work nicely and are nice and stable. Before I start taking things out -
anyone got any ideas of what the problem is most likely to be.

You didn't say if you have an electrical or mechanical rev counter, checking your profile says you have a 1500, so I am assuming electronic.
I am guessing but the needle could be binding at the 3000 mark, you could have a misfire causing iffy readings.
best bet would be a replacement, they are cheap and plentiful.

Yes, it's an electronic one on a 1500. There's definitely no misfire in the 2500 - 6000 range as the power shoots up at 2500 and just keeps coming
until I get scared to rev it any more, it also sounds 'clean'. Could be dirt causing sticking I suppose.

I've a mk4 1500 with electric rev counter. Mine was totally erratic. Lots of studying wiring diagram showed an earth off it but car did not one
fitted.
Fitted an earth lead and it is now very accurate (when compared to a electronic timinggun with rev counter).
Now to get spedo to be reliable!!
