My Spit ('80) has the same issue, also on the drivers side. In taking off the door trim panel, it all became a little clearer for me. The unlocking arm
has a small hole on the end, which is then meant to clip onto the eye-let coming out (ie. 90 degree to the door). However, this has been slipping off,
instead meaning the large 'o' shapped clip is instead the piece that is moved.
The result is you can open from the inside, as this larger 'o' shaped clip is enough from the inside, but NOT from the outside. It is a simple case of just popping the small hole onto the eye-let
However, the eye-let does seem to have a little bump on it, which should mean the main unlocking arm should clip securely past this. Otherwise, it will just fall off again in time. But I just cannot get it to clip past the bump. Anyone help on this score?

Well, on the driver's side there appears to be some kind of washer that has been fixed into position , maybe by superglue that, while still allowing free movement to the vertical arm, keeps its position by preventing it travelling along the horizontal. Your problem happens occasionally to me on the passenger side, but it seems to be behaving at the moment!
Now I've said it...
Alas it is behind the outer handle that is giving me woe. Besides which it is a bit embarrasing when trying to impress the lay-deez!

I had the same problem with mine but it was the inside handle that gave up. I invested in a new set of door lock and handles so that the same key would open both doors and tackled this at the same time! They were a real pig to fit. It was the same piece on the rods inside of the door which kept coming adrift except it was the inside handle not the outside one. I fixed it (with much cursing and swearing!) but after a good few slams the thing came apart again. Funnily enough it's still not fixed, I just reach over the top and use the outside handle, trying to look debonair at the same time!-

I have (finally) taken the mechanism apart and have found the offending piece! The plastic hoop with the spring attached (see picture -on next thread as my computer went funny!- courtesy of Rimmer Bros) has broken at the hoop bit. Alas, as you can see by the pic, it doesn't appear to be a stockable item! I was wondering if anyone who is using a Spit for a donor car would have this bit on the driver's side and be willing to help a Spitter in need? Ha ha, this is a common problem - i've had two or three of them break in two years of ownership. Rimmers autojumble used to be full of door handles with those bits broken on them! I wonder if they'll change materials/suppliers?-

Hi Martin,
I've replaced two or three of these for friends (and one on my Mk3 GT6). I used to buy them from John Kipping so maybe Canley Classics stock them?
The original ones were made of white plastic and the remanufactured ones were a silvery grey metal. The remanufactured ones did seem to be a bit soft, but they *should* only be doing light work.
I think, however, that they tend to get stressed because the pivot at the front of the outer handle wears and as the handle swings out (and forward) it allows extra pressure to travel back, down the shaft. A friend is onto her third one (she's a former gym teacher!) as the body of the door handle is quite worn.
It might also be an idea to check the stop at the front of the handle body is intact. My friend had been swinging the handle so vigorously that she had cracked the stop and pushed it back - allowing even more strain to be placed on the offending part.
