Does anyone have any tips for rust prevention treatments....?

  From reading around it appears that etching primer has superseded red oxide primer.
  
  I think the way to go is
  
  (1) Rub panel back
  (1a) Apply 'Dinitrol' type product
  (2) Apply etching primer
  (3) Apply filling primer
  (4) Apply guide coat
  (5) rub back again
  (6 Repeat 3 4,and 5 until happy
  (7) apply thin cellulose top coats
  
  If I am wrong and subsequently talking out of my exhaust here, then any corrections would be appreciated&8230;!!!
  
  Also any good experiences with various brand names of rust treatments or etch/ fill primer would be really helpful.
  
  Surely I am not the only one whose spitfire is rusting&8230;.?

    Bloody hell, it looks so easy when you put it like that!
    You missed out 5a - Swear and 5b - Cry 5d - Go for a beer.
    Only thing I'd say is terminology, watch what you ask for at the paint supply shop..
    Primers, you have
    'etch' this eats into the bare metal to give itself, and all subsequent paint, a good key
    'Filler' is specifically formulated to prime , well, filler. i.e. not metal.
    'High build' this is meant to create a thicker coat, so building out the paint to the old level.
    
    From my first comment, you'll already understand that knowing all this has not helped me produce a surface worth spraying... yet!!

        Halfords do the U-POL line of paints which includes these primers, and more. It's expensive though
        For generic products, there is a national franchise I use called 'SprayStore'. My local guys are very helpful. I'm sure there are others!

    For rust treatment I have used Hamerite Kurust successfully, it's a very good product but won't leave a bare metal surface which is probably required by etch primer (?). It's also available for halfords and most other motor accessory shops.

      I am amazed that this topic has not had more posts. I love Spitfires but hate rust. Recently I tried using electrolysis to remove rust (Type "electrolysis rust removal" into google). It worked pretty well. A friend of mine suggested using loft insulation placed on the floorpan to act as a sponge for the solution.

  When I started looking at the products on the market to rust prevent my spitfire, I happened across http://www.bilthamber.com. I don't have anything to do with the company and haven't had any freebees etc.
  
  I didn't want to use Waxoil, The problem is as time goes by it dries out and cracks... the water seeps in front of it and gets held against the metal.
  
  Diditrol always stays slightly sticky and helps to prevent that, but I thought I would try Bilthammers product as the reviews were good and they were slightly cheaper
  
  I bought 4-5 cans of there Dynax s50 to spray the sills etc.
  
  All I can say is so far very good results. I sprayed a sheet of old mild steel and put it outside in a damp spot about 4-5 months ago. The half sprayed is still shiny underneath the Dynax, and I scratched the surface with a nail a few times over the months and again, it does seem to have repaired its self and sealed the scratches.
  
  I will be spraying the under side of the car as well (even though it's been acid etched and painted) to see how it stands up to the rigors of day to day driving.
  
  I hope it helps... only time will tell.
  
  Check out the comparison, I know that its easy to fake but, I must say it seem to tally with my experience so far.

  I used Tectyl products to rust proof my Dolomite Sprint back in 1979&8230; it was still rust free when I sold it 10 years later

      I have been using POR products for the the last 5 years on numerous cars and its seems to be doing the trick.
      
      You can get a full range of treatments starting from strippers to rust encapsulator and primers.
      
      I buy mine from Frost, probably not the cheapest option, but it dos seem to work.
