Hi all, can you help again please? My Spit has a distinct aroma of petrol vapour when out driving and sometimes in the garage when its 'bounced' or jacked
up (sadly a frequent affair). The tank is sound, no leaks in the system, but it does need a tune so this could be some of the problem when out driving. My
guess was the breather pipe so I had a look and there is about 8 inches of plastic pipe attached with a bolt pushed firmly in the end effectively sealing
it. I grant you this could be a BL actioned modification (and I've seen a few that Fiat would have been proud of...cough..X19..cough). The filler looks
like it should be a vented type as there is a hole in the rubber seal.
Is this a common problem or is there something missing here?
By the way my n/s rear shocker (of goodly age by the look of it) dumped its oil on the garage floor yesterday, never known that happen before but it may
explain the knocking I thought was the spare tyre bouncing around!! Rimmers in the morning then....
Thanx in advance..Bye the way my bonnet rebuild has reduced the rattles and creaks by 75% at least...tell me to shut up pleeeze.

You don't say where the smell is strongest but my best guess would be that this is either perished fuel hoses, a knackard jet (is it damp at the
bottom) or a stuck needle valve in the float chamber. All of these were causing my car to reek of petrol before I eliminated them one by one (and I now
have pretty much replaced the entire fuel system!!!)

Sorry Stephen, forgot to mention that bit. The smell is only around the rear of the car, boot and rear cockpit being favourite. Usually only after
the petrol has been agitated in the tank and the fumes settle. When driving the smell is again strongest towards the rear of the car.
Thanx. Phil.

Sounds like the blanking plug on the tank breather is perished or has a hole in.
If your car has a vented fuel filler cap then the vent on top of the tank (near the fuel take-off pipe) should be blocked off. I think that all
1500s had vented caps (am I right?) so it may be that the short piece of hose with a bolt in is damaged or not fitting tightly enough.
It could also be perished rubbers or bad joints in the fuel take-off pipe feeding to the engine.
Just my thoughts
