Don't touch Champions, I've had so many fail I've lost count, some after only doing a few miles. I now use NGK and have had no problems since.

ngk and some of their motorcycle plug caps if you are feeling flush

Thanks for the advice - do you happen to know which type of NGK to use in a 1500? I've read an earlier thread mentioning BP6ES, BP7ES and BP8ES - but not sure which of these are the best all-rounders?

I have gone for the Palladium NGKs, the ones with the fine wire centre electrode 6 or 7 or 8 just the heat range but they seem pretty insensitive to the heat setting
go for the NGK equivalent of the suggested Champion plug, your local independant parts shop will be ready for your custom

I've recently found myself in the same boat trying to choose some spark plugs suitable for my 1500. I thought I had settled on getting the BP7EV's and some fast road leads from the club shop (maybe a sports coil, not sure) until looking online they are no longer available. Typical. Now i'm back to where I started. They offer the competition plugs but surely they can't be that similar? What differences are there? I don't intend to compete in my spitfire. But then getting competition plugs would require competition leads would they not? and so on. The 6's are still offered, but I was wary that they were too close to standard. Not sure what heat rating the standard ones are, but they're not self cleaning at the moment... hence the need for a change. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

a heat range grade eithere way isn't going to make any difference in a non-race triumph engine of good health, ie not loosing oil or compression past the rings
also if you do choose the fine wire center electrode type they will run very happilly on ordinary leads and coils, they just don't need so much attention in service, that's how NGKs get my vote
fit them and forget

Ok, I think i'm getting there... slowly. I was in halfords at lunchtime, but things started to get way out of hand. As far as I can see from the catalogues I have etc, i'm going for either BP6EV (standard plugs), BP7EVX. I'm swayed towards the 7's because they are noted as the fast road plugs, but they have been phased out by the EVX (competition plugs). What do the letters mean? and what are the differences? If i bought the fast road leads, and the BP7EVX's would I have bought a good combination? Or would the BP6EV's work better? Sorry to keep going on...

I presently use the following in my Vitesse Mk.2:
NGK Stock 6637: BPR6EIX Iridiums, as Iridium is 8 times harder than Palladium.
If they ever wear out, I could try Stock 3903: BPR6EIX-II.
Or if I can't get either of the above, there is always:
6764 : BPR6EVX-II
7084 : BPR6EGP
6427 : BPR6EY
7131 : BPR6ES
7727 : BP6EY
7824 : BP6EV
1263 : BP6ET
7333 : BP6ES
Whatever else you do, forget Champion, and FWIW, I have never had any success with Bosch in Triumphs, although they work fine in my Toyotas!

If I fit the I use the IX iridium plugs would I need to upgrade to a performance coil in my Spit 1500?
I alredy have performane HT leads fitted with NGK plug caps.

Most unlikely for road use. Higher spec plugs can actually be EASIER to fire. Whether you would only get the full benefit of the new plugs with a sports coil and uprated leads, is another question. To get the benefit from a sports coil usually requires a wider plug gap (about 30 thou if I recall, rather than 25 thou).-

To get full benefit from the individually upgraded components, you will have to upgrade the whole ignition system, if not then the weakest point will degrade first.
ie. I fitted MSD 6-Digital, (but you could use MSD-6AL), Multple Spark Discharge Unit, with MSD Blaster 2 Coil (43,000 volts) and Magnecour 8mm High Tension Leads with NGK Iridium Plugs plus a Petronix Hall Effect Unit...the result being the the reproduction Lucas distributor cap on my Lucas distributor went out after 2,000 miles from new. (they are not as good as the original caps, nor for that matter are the rotor arms)...I subsequently changed the distributor to a Mallory - and got a matching Petronix unit for it, and now all is good again.
The Mallory distributor is a nice looking alloy bodied unit with a decent cap - with large copper contacts and a decent sized rotor arm.

Can anyone recommend a spark plug for a 1147 mk2 engine fitted with aldon ignitor and performance coil and club (Magnecor) competition leads? It has a
slightly hotter cam shaft than standard, although I don't know a precise spec. Currently has NGK BP6HS plugs fitted. The reference books recommend
BPR6H. What's the difference between these two?

There are two things to consider with spark plug types. Firstly the reach (how long the threaded bit is, and so how far into the combustion chamber the plug extends). This is non-negotiable! Too long and you'll smash the piston, too short and the plug will be recessed and ignition will be delayed and the combusiton chamber will not "work" as intended in terms of charge burning.
The other issue is "heat rating" and this is where different states of tune can affect the optimum plug. If you look elsewhere in this board (perhaps on the Vitesse board?) in the last couple of months you should find someone's explanation og the grading of NGK plugs.
Provided the engine does not pink, and the plugs show no signs of overheating, uprating the ignition components should not mean drastically different plugs are needed.
