Hi Paul
My experience is this. Last year I decided to take the plunge and fit EI to my MKIV. I liked the sound of possibly having a bit more power!
I bought the Lumenition Magnetronic kit from Moss for 3 reasons; (1) there's a branch of Moss in my town and it would save on p & p; (2) because it
was cheaper than the Optronic one; and (3) a little bit because it all fits inside the dizzy cap.
All went well until a week or so later I was driving home from work through the city centre and the engine cut out. As I was getting fairly close to
fill-up time anyway, I cursed the fuel gauge and my own stupidity, and fortunately had enough momentum to coast onto the forecourt of a handily-sited
petrol station. I filled up, payed and went back to the car. Which wouldn't start. After several attempts, I had to push the car to the side of the
forecourt in full view of everyone else leaving the city centre, which would be embarrassing in any car, but more so being in a classic.
I then got the bus home and went back to the petrol station later in the evening. The short version is, when I eventually got back home I checked
various things (as described in the fitting instructions) and came to the conclusion that the EI unit was playing up. I got a replacement unit from
Moss. And the car died twice one night on my way home the following week.
I took the second Magnetronic unit back and put my refund towards an Optronic unit and I've not had any trouble since. I've heard other people say
they've had no trouble with the Magnetronic system so it's probably just that Moss had got a duff batch or something like that.
It doesn't bother me having the module stuck under the bonnet as a Spit's scuttle top looks fairly cluttered anyway and it's just one more funny-shaped
lump of metal bolted down. I managed not to drill any extra holes either. I got two stips of metal and bent them to a right angle. I attached the
module to one end and bolted the others underneath the coil (I think) or something like that so that the unit hangs over the edge of the bulkhead. I
figure that that way it will get more cooling from the air coming under the bonnet.
Sorry for the long rambling reply! It's only my experience anyway and I'm sure that nothing would go wrong if you did get the Magnetronic and I've
found the Optronic to be really good.
Cheers,
Quentin
