hi guys
really really had enough!!!
i recently have had loads of issues with my water pump, today i thought i had it sorted. After fretting that i had the wrong water pump, i have been told
by two very reliable sources that the water pumps are interchangeable between the mark I. II. III and the markIV, happy days. I fitted the mark III pump to
my mark IV, put on my new radiator, all with new sills bolts and gaskets, but alas when starting the spitfire i heard an awful noise and turned it off
straight away. Turns out the fan blades were
catching on the bit that sticks out of the top of the radiator, no problem moved the radiator up a bit problem solved. started up again and noticed that
water was indeed dripping from the water pump. It looked like a simple case of the bolts not being tight enough, so i tightened them, and guess what i
threaded two of them, again.
right now i have had my whinge my questions are thus, how the hell do you get the bolts on tight without threading them and get a good seal between the
pump and the housing.
also i have a really bad feeling that the water may be leaking from the hole in the bottom of the pump. Is it possible that something caused that last one
to leak and now i have fitted the new one that same thing has broken this one.
Ok thanks for reading all that, and thanks in advance for your help. i am kinda new to all this getting my hands dirty stuff

Hiya Mark, did you use something like Hermetite Red sealing compound on the gaskets? Availiable from almost any motor spares shop. The drain under the
water pump bearing (drilled hole) is to allow any coolant that creeps past the bearing seal in the pump to escape. Sounds like you have a faulty pump
if this is leaking. Steep learning curve I suspect....hang on in there!!

Mark..........after years of working on heavy plant machines,my idea of nipping up little fixings was obviously different to most car manufacturers.Buy
yourself a torque wrench and you'll save yourself loads of stripping and swearing. If you follow the settings in the books you won't go far
wrong.Personally ,for cars,i use 3/8 drive sockets (as i found my 1" drive set to be a tad too large for most applications) as they are easier to get
into tight spots and have more "feel".
Good luck with the pump, make sure the gasket is ok or get a new one,get some sealant around it before you fit the new one,the fixings don't need to be
vein rising tight.

its worked,
sort of.
ìm so tantalisingly close. I have used sealant on both the water pump gasket and the thermostat housing gasket, (N.B, I didn't use the
paper gasket is that going to be an issue?) started her up and found that at first no leeks any where then i notice water leaking from the bottom
hose from the radiator. I think that just needs the jubilee band tightened. what is of more concern is that upon starting the engine all I can hear
is the whoosh from the fan it is far louder than before. has anyone else noticed this when changing from a mark IV to a mark 3 water pump. Also the
car is completely out of tune its running like a dog why is this. I just have a bad feeling that some of these symptoms are a result of a bigger
problem.
Thanks to all of you that have helped so far
