Hello,
Having read a lot about cooling problems, the installation of wider radiators, electric cooling fans and so on, I tink whe should ask when is it running
hot?
I have an MK IV with an extra wide radiator the normal mechanical fan, the radiator and engine bay valences installed, and on the motorway doing about 3500
to 4000 revs the temp indicator climbs to between half and max. Lets say 3/4 indication, now for me this is the limit, if it goes higher I stop the car or
leave the motorway. I know the last couple of weeks whe had exeptionally high temperatures here in France but normally I do not reach these temp
indications. Maybe important to know, my number plate is installed below the radiator grille, and currently I am running a 75°thermostat instead
of the 83° thermostat.
I can always get the temp down if I drive the car below 3000 revs...
I used to suffer seriously from overheating up to the point where I burned a hole in one of the pistons due to overheating, and to make a long story short
since I sorted the mixture out the car runs a lot cooler and 100% better.
Anyway my question what do you consider hot or overheating?????

In my previous mesage I said that I burned a hole in one of the pistons due to overheating, obviously the hole whas caused by pinking due to a lean
mixture and an overadvanced ignition. But a lean mixture burn hotter than a rich mixture. If you suffer from an erratic idle when warm and the engine
is hesitating under axcelleration or even during steady driving, and you seems to have to overadvance the ignition to get it running better, check out
the mixture! Of course maybe there are other reasons for overheating but it solved my problem!
