What mark Spitfire?
On the MkIV/1500 the retainer plate is standard & has two bolt holes but is an angle profile (see pic). Take the one off your old hood & glue it in the new one. Offer it up to the car & carefully mark exactly where it should go before glueing (it may not be perfectly central!). Note that it has a slight curve to it.
